The uproar over Henry Cavill exiting The Witcher and leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia was unparalleled. The news took the fandom by storm as everyone expressed annoyance and sadness over the incredible actor saying goodbye to one of his most iconic roles to date.

His brooding mischief and ability to take on intricate action sequences made him a fan favorite. Now, as Liam Hemsworth steps into the world of monsters and action, he has big shoes to fill since Cavill’s fans will have a hard time accepting someone other than him as the Witcher.

Henry Cavill was the perfect Witcher, there’s no doubt about that. After his exit from the show, the creators had to find another actor who could embody the charm and charisma of Geralt well. Many rounds of screen tests and auditions later, it was announced that Liam Hemsworth was going to be carrying the baton ahead.

Fans were not too happy with this turn of events for two reasons. The first is that Cavill is irreplaceable. Secondly, Hemsworth has been embroiled in controversy regarding his relationship with Miley Cyrus. It felt like both the fandoms united against this decision and decided not to accept Hemsworth in that role.

Now, The Witcher has released a first look at the actor in Geralt’s personality. While the image does look good, fans are not convinced his acting chops will be able to do justice to the show.

Some fans are happy to see that the makers of the show have kept the look relevant and similar to what The Witcher exactly looks like. On the other hand, many are claiming that Cavill was the only saving grace for The Witcher and there’s a huge possibility that this move will see a reduction in viewings. This further might cause the show to get canceled only after one season. The embers of the once-fiery bright horizons of the Netflix show are slowly dying out.

Why did Henry Cavill leave The Witcher?

After three successful seasons of The Witcher, Cavill decided to exit the show to pursue a more ambitious project. However, a more controversial reason behind his departure was the showrunners’ inability to capture the essence of the books and what Cavill wanted to embody on the screen.

The actor has been a fan of the books for a long time and could not see that legacy butchered in the adaptation. Cavill said in an interview with Philippine Star,

The things that I pushed for, it was not necessarily just more dialogue. It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen. Because as I’m sure you know in the books, Geralt is an amateur philosopher. He’s an intellectual. He’s wise and thoughtful. Yes, he’s at times morose, morbid, and snarky. But it’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.

Despite the drama surrounding his exit. Cavill is moving on to better things with his Warhammer project which is said to be his glamorous comeback. He is also starring in the movie adaptation of The Rosie Project, the third installment of Enola Holmes and In The Grey which is directed by Guy Ritchie.
