McConaughey has also starred in sci-fi movies and comedies. That said, much like most other Hollywood stars, he has also been a part of the superhero franchise Marvel Cinematic Universe at least in some capacity. Now, however, there is a chance that he can become a part of the DC superhero franchise under this one condition.

Matthew McConaughey has worked with many great directors over the years. For instance, Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. McConaughey’s filmography is studded with such great projects. However, he has yet to star in a big role in a superhero movie.

The Magic Mike star is rumored to star as Green Lantern in James Gunn’s DC Universe. Industry insider Jeff Sneider previously reported on his blog The Insneider that MCU star Josh Brolin has been offered the opportunity to star as Hal Jordan in HBO’s Lanterns series. He has learned that McConaughey or HBO’s The Corrections pilot star Ewan McGregor might get cast if Brolin declines.

Josh Brolin has famously played the role of the Titan Thanos in MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, followed by larger roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. He has also portrayed Cable in Deadpool 2.

McConaughey voiced the character Cowboypool in the recently released blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. He was offered the role of Star Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. After he declined the role, it went to Kurt Russell.

McConaughey could have become a part of the MCU years ago if he had not turned down Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which was a critical and commercial success. However, he refused to portray the character he was offered in favor of starring in a different movie.

During his interview with Playboy, the actor revealed why he chose to star in the big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. He said (via Indie Wire):

I like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ but what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.’ I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director [Nikolaj Arcel] and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black — a.k.a. the Devil — in my version of this Stephen King novel.

The Dark Tower starred Thor star Idris Elba as the protagonist opposite McConaughey’s villain. The movie received negative reviews primarily because the creators tried to compress all the source material into a single film. It did not fare well at the box office either.
