Directed by Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot is an animated science fiction adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation. Peter Brown’s 2016 novel of the same name bases the movie, which features the voices of Pedro Pascal, Lupita Nyong’o, Kit Connor, Catherine O’Hara, and more. The movie follows a service robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island trying to adapt to the surroundings to live. The robot becomes the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose.
Upon release, the movie received critical acclaim for its animation, visuals, storyline, and emotional depth of characters. The Wild Robot premiered at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival and received positive comments. It became the fifth-highest-grossing animated film of 2024. Director Chris Sanders gets candid about adapting The Wild Robot
The 30th Critics’ Choice Awards were announced on December 12, 2024. Conclave and Wicked led the film nominations, earning eleven nominations each. For the television awards, Shōgun led the nominations, earning six. For Best Animated Feature, the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, Inside Out 2, is competing with the recent fan-favorite movie, The Wild Robot.
The director of The Wild Robot, Chris Sanders had shared that he had known about the book through his daughter, and upon reading it, he fell in love with the story. In his interview with Animation Magazine, he mentioned;
Peter Brown’s book was at once deceptively simple and emotionally complex. I like stories and characters, and I am unafraid to feel and to risk greatly. As I made my way through the pages, I felt more and more that I was the right person to bring this to the screen.
Sanders explained that he felt like protecting the character and spirit of the story while finding a way to translate it into a movie. The filmmaker further shared that he only engages in projects that take risks and go to audacious places. But he noted that with The Wild Robot, he felt a sense of unusual purity which he did not expect to encounter in his career. The filmmaker was excited to bring the story to the screens for the audience.
He praised DreamWorks Animation for pushing the boundaries and allowing the animated movies including The Puss in the Boots, The Last Wish and more, to go beyond the expectations. The Wild Robot has received massive appreciation from the critics as well as the audience.
The Wild Robot holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting that it’s a simple tale told with great sophistication. They added that The Wild Robot is wondrous entertainment that dazzles the eye while filling the viewer’s heart to the brim. Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing movie of 2024, along with being the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. It holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and despite it being one of the most relatable movies of 2024, fans still feel that The Wild Robot deserves to win the Best Animated Feature award at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards.
