If you’ve been sleeping on Wistoria: Wand and Sword, it’s time to binge it, as it has one of the simplest yet most fantastical magic systems of all time. It’s a system that is not just “cast a spell, things happen,” like Harry Potter, even though it draws a lot of aesthetic inspiration from it.
In this magic system, there’s a whole hierarchy, multiple elements, secret techniques, and a main character who literally cannot use magic at all in a world where magic is, in fact, everything. At first, it may sound like it won’t work, but it does. If you’ve been confused about ranks, elements, or what “Wis” even is, don’t worry- we’re breaking it all down.
What Is Magic in Wistoria: Wand and Sword
In this world, magic is basically the entire social ladder. In the very first chapter of the manga, Edward Serfence, one of the magic instructors, sums it up perfectly with his quote: “Authority is magic, power is magic power, and heroes are mages”. Meaning, if you can’t cast magic, you’re simply good for nothing. And Will is like a single muggle in that entire world.
More technically speaking, magic is cast by burning through your own magic power, usually using a wand as the tool that channels your magic power. However, it appears that the wands aren’t always necessary, as Elfaria has been seen casting magic without any wand. It could be that she is a sole exception because of being a genius, but it proves wand isn’t necessary. In fact, during the bloom arc, some mages pointed out that Will’s sword can be considered a wand.
Mage Ranks and Magic Tiers
In this world, spells and mages are both sorted by tier. The Low-tier covers minor offensive magic or magic for simple everyday tasks. On the other hand, the middle- and high-tier magic is basically the standard for academic elites, requiring precise control to even cast.
At the top of all sits the supreme-tier, which is rare and devastating magic capable of reshaping landscapes and is usually cast by only Magia Vanders or some genuinely gifted mages.
But who are Magia Vanders? They are the actual strongest mages in the entire world. That title is not just for showing what they are capable of, as they are also responsible for protecting the world from the threats that are above the fake sky (a barrier created by the Magia Vanders). There are also official rank titles thrown around, like the High Mage rank, which sits above your average academy mage and comes with serious respect attached.

Magic in Wistoria isn’t just “fireball go brrr”; it’s split by element. There are seven primary elements: light, fire, earth, water, wind, lightning, and darkness, and yes, ice counts too; it’s just categorized as a type of water magic.
As we have seen in the anime, most mages only get a single element, and that’s simply how the system works. Why is that the case? We have no explanation for that as of right now. Mages who can actually use more than one element are called Mults. Being a Mult is basically this anime’s equivalent of being a talented doctor and engineer at the same time.
Not every spell fits into the seven elements either. Ordinary magic, like search-type spells or stealth spells, doesn’t belong to any element at all. It’s just a separate category of generally useful magic every mage can tap into regardless of their specialty.
It’s worth pointing out that elves are just built differently when it comes to magic. They’re naturally more gifted than human mages, and some of them can access Fantasy Magic, a wild elven-exclusive magic that can literally turn imagination into reality. The inside of the tower is built using that magic as well, as the tower appears to be thin from the outside, but has a whole society inside it.
Will Serfort’s Wis: Everything You Need to Know
Now, this is what makes Wistoria truly unique, as it didn’t stop there with its magic system. Even though Will has zero ability to cast spells, and is like the only muggle in the entire world, he has access to something nobody else in the story has, and that is Wis.
Wis is a unique form of power that lets Will absorb other people’s spells and channel them straight into his sword, turning it into a magic blade. However, we do not have confirmation that it’s even “magic”. There is a lot of confusion and mystery surrounding Wis, as it’s referred to by some seriously dramatic titles – it’s called the “fifth element”, the “primeval key that set the world in motion”, and none of those titles give any explanation of what it is.
Will can also pull magic from his memory, which makes it all the more confusing. My personal theory is that Wis is responsible for all forms of magic, like a blank template, also giving it the white nature that it has.
