Tom Holland can safely call his role as Spider-Man his most prominent claim to fame. The youngest among all three 21st-century live-action actors of the web-slinger, he has gone on to reprise his role in six movies so far within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, his presence in two of the biggest Avengers films and a central role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home further leveraged his importance within the franchise alongside an expanding global recognition.

Yet, there is debate. The British actor may have inspired many across the globe and lit up thousands of fans’ emotions with his portrayal of the iconic hero, but many have questioned his credibility beyond. A war of words recently took over social media and called for exchanges on this very issue- Hollands’ true merits as an actor beyond Marvel’s poster-boy. With strong arguments coming from both sides, the fire raged on in search of an answer.

Playing a superhero in the demanding CGI and heavy-action landscape is no easy feat. However, for Tom Holland, the role of Spider-Man is not only his longest stint yet, but it is also the very one that keeps him at the center of debate. Not long after news broke out of the 28-year-old officially returning for the MCU’s Spider-Man 4, an X (formerly Twitter) user lambasted him for not having a career outside the franchise.

Expectedly, a drove of fans arrived in the replies to highlight the actor’s achievements, many of which came long before his 2016 Marvel debut. Additionally, several fans also pointed out that Spider-Man meant a lot to people, and thus, playing the character was a privilege while also highlighting his award-winning role in 2012’s The Impossible. Yet, critics argued that Holland’s acting triumph was limited and “washed”.

Analytically, the critical take on Tom Holland lacked any teeth, as pointed out by many fans. As a prime highlight, his acting debut at about 12 years of age in Billy Elliot the Musical should suffice. Rather, his acting and dancing skills caught the attention of members of the West End production who initially offered him a supporting role in the 2008 project before promoting him to the lead role, again based solely on his performance prowess.

Two Tom Holland films beyond Spider-Man that prove his mettle

Building on the fans’ takes as well as from actual reports, there should be no doubt that Tom Holland is beyond Spider-Man. As versatile an actor as any, his two roles, one in 2022’s Uncharted and another in 2020’s The Devil All the Time, shine a candle at the vast acting range he possesses. In the former, the Avengers: Endgame star played a street-smart treasure hunter named Nathan Drake, in a story based on the video game series of the same name.

Also starring Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, the film utilized Holland’s gymnastics and dance background as he opted to perform many of his own stunts. Furthermore, his balanced portrayal of humor and intensity in scenes involving planes and cars highlighted his action-star outlook and his potential to headline franchises outside Marvel.

On the other hand, his portrayal of Arvin Russell in The Devil All the Time marked his ability to deliver roles with full justice in a plot that demanded rigorous amounts of psychological thrill. Moral struggles and emotional complexities clearly reflected in his performance, which proved that he could juggle all sorts of roles that Hollywood could possibly throw at him, with Spider-Man being just his very start.

Uncharted can be streamed on Hulu whereas The Devil All the Time is streaming on Netflix.
