“A Mormon woman wrote this book”: Kristen Stewart Blasts Twilight for Being ‘Oppressive’ and ‘Gay’ After Confirming Her Own Sexuality
Kristen Stewart has been a trailblazer when it comes to queer representation and getting inclusive roles for all. Currently, she is working on her directorial debut and finding someone to fund the project that outlines a bisexual woman’s thought process. She has vowed that until she makes this movie, she will not partake in another movie in a moment of angst. Moreover, Stewart is excited for her projects featured at the Sundance Film Festival too.
Kristen Stewart’s Conversations Around Sexuality
In a recent conversation with Variety where Kristen Stewart was featured on the cover, she opened up about her experience in the movie industry and her upcoming projects that she is excited about. Apart from the slew of independent movies she is currently working on, Stewart credits her stardom to the blockbuster franchise Twilight. Her immense learnings and experience in the industry led her to earn an Oscar nomination for her role in Spencer.
At the same time, Stewart has faced immense criticism and scrutiny over her relationships by the media, whether they are straight or gay. She never lets it bother her and continues to live a life of grace and humility. In hindsight, she recalls the roles she has done in the past and how everything came together for her to come out on a Saturday Night Live episode. She said in the interview,
“I can only see it now. I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It’s such a gay movie. I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.”
When you let life take its course, many things seem uncertain at first but become crystal clear once you live through it. That sort of epiphany is although rare, it is helpful for people who are finding their own way in the world. Stewart agrees and believes that everyone has a gay side to them and that they only unravel once they tug that string. She further adds that Jodie Foster, her co-star in the movie Panic Room, has helped her through some tough times and enabled her to be strong in the face of adversity.
Next Chapter in Kristen Stewart’s Life
Stewart seems geared up to make it big on her own. Starting at Sundance, she wants to make independent movies that resonate with her personality and people like her. She said, “I want to go make friends. “I want to be a young filmmaker. I need to find my people.” Authenticity and honesty drive her passion in the movies and she wants to remain true to those aspects in the future.
At Sundance, Stewart will be seen in two projects namely Love Me and a queer crime thriller called Love Lies Bleeding. In a quintessential sense, the actress is leveraging her stardom from commercial movies to do what she truly wants. She is striving to be comfortable with her work and what she wants to achieve in life.
