“Acting really is a goofy ass job lol”: Karl Urban Ruined the Coolest Showdown in ‘The Boys’ Between Butcher and Homelander By Breaking the Fourth Wall
- Karl Urban's laser scenes involved intense staring and imagination on set.
- Urban felt "ridiculous" pretending lasers came from his eyes.
- However, the special effects team made the final product look amazing.
While the finished project looks glamorous and smooth, acting often includes plenty of silly moments behind the scenes. This is especially true when actors have to do scenes with lots of special effects, like shooting lasers from their eyes.
The funny behind-the-scenes moments of filming laser-eyed scenes in the superhero show The Boys, and Karl Urban’s experiences, show how acting can be strange and amusing at the same time. However, his actions kind of spoiled the tension of the scene.
Karl Urban’s ‘Laser Stare’ Revealed as Imaginative Act
In Season 3 of The Boys, Karl Urban‘s character, Billy Butcher, gets temporary superpowers from a new substance called Temp V. One of his powers is shooting lasers from his eyes. On screen, it looks amazing, but filming those scenes meant Urban had to use a lot of imagination.
During an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor humorously explained that filming those laser scenes was just him standing still and staring intensely, pretending lasers were shooting from his eyes. Even Stephen Colbert couldn’t help but imitate Urban’s laser stare.

Urban’s experience filming the laser scenes is a perfect example of how actors often have to rely on their imagination and comedic timing to bring scenes to life. He himself admitted to feeling a bit “ridiculous” while filming the scenes in an interview with Variety. The 52-year-old said:
It felt a little bit ridiculous, to tell you the truth. The reality is, you’re standing on set and you’re doing your best to give a laser stare, but there’s no lasers coming out, obviously. So you just hope the special effects department will come and save your ass, which they do. We’re so blessed, they did an amazing job on the special effects this season.
Actors need to trust the special effects team to turn their acting into something amazing. In The Boys, the special effects crew did an awesome job making Butcher’s laser vision look fantastic.
