Agatha All Along Season 2: Agatha Harkness’ Wicked Future in the MCU Could Have One Twist No Fan Was Expecting
- 'Agatha All Along' exceeded initial expectations, becoming a hit series with a strong finale and high ratings.
- The show will be submitted as a comedy series rather than a limited series for awards, which opens the possibility of season 2.
- The finale hinted at a link to the MCU’s Young Avengers arc, with Agatha Harkness’ ghost and Billy Maximoff teaming up to locate his brother.
It was 2021 when WandaVision started the expansion of MCU in the world of TV series as well, and much like critics, fans were also skeptical about how the studio would be able to justify the grandeur of its movies on small screens.
Fast forward to 2024, and MCU has come a long way with many of its hit-and-miss Disney+ shows. Also, a similar sort of skepticism was there for its latest show and WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, as the title character was not popular enough to be much anticipated by fans.
Agatha All Along‘s Success and Possible Season 2
Kathryn Hahn returned as Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along after getting trapped by Wanda Maximoff’s spell at the end of WandaVision. The show shows how she escapes the spell and goes on to regain her powers, and on the way, she faces multiple challenges and some new faces.
The show has 9 episodes with an average runtime of around 30-45 minutes per episode. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has the least production budget among all the Marvel shows, which means it is much less than Echo‘s $40 million budget (as per Forbes).
However, unlike the initial expectations, the finale episodes of Agatha All Along have gained 4.6 million and 3.9 million views on the day of their release (according to Variety). The show is currently rated 83% by both audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, the hit series is looking to bag some more accolades. According to Variety, Agatha All Along will compete for Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and upcoming Emmy Awards in the category of comedy. It will compete against shows like Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Hacks.
The show was initially presented as a miniseries, which can be essentially considered a shorter form of a limited series. According to the Television Academy, to qualify as a limited series, “The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons,” (via Emmys.com).
However, this guideline restricts Agatha All Along from having continuation, which is probably why the studios have decided to put it under the comedy category for various TV awards.
This also fits well with the storyline of the show, as it was already a continuation of WandaVision. Moreover, the ending of the show hints at a continuation of Billy Maximoff’s story, which again leaves the possibility of a second season or probably another spin-off.
Possible Plot of Agatha All Along Season 2
The end of Agatha All Along shows Harkness’ death and her return as a ghost. It shows Billy Maximoff’s realization that the Witches’ Road is a creation of his mind, much like his mother Wanda Maximoff’s Hex.
It also shows Billy fulfilling his wish of reviving his brother Tommy into someone else’s body, who will most probably become Speed in the future of MCU. Since the ending of the show shows both Harkness and Billy teaming up to search for Tommy, there are chances that the upcoming season will be about their search and discovery.
Moreover, showrunner Jac Schaeffer said in an interview with The Wrap,
You know, it’s hard to speak about because I have a lot of awareness of what the handoffs are between different properties. So really, all I can say is I, as a fan, am so excited about this duo of Billy Maximoff and his spirit guide, Ghost Agatha. And I think that there’s a lot of opportunity there.
Although Marvel is packed in 2025 with its series and movies and 2026 being the beginning of the end of the Multiverse saga, it seems that Agatha All Along might not be getting a second season anytime soon. However, with the gradual building of a Young Avengers team, it is very possible to see Tommy’s Speed in the future.
Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.
