Andre Braugher Became Anxious Before Brooklyn 99 Final Season After One Extremely Dark Scene With Co-Star Terry Crews
The iconic buddy cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine has delighted fans for eight straight seasons. While walking the tightrope of navigating social issues and staying hilarious to align with the genre, the show and its creators have come up with amazing storylines. One such plot after the Black Lives Matter protests changed the way the creators envisioned season 8 of the American comedy series.
Andre Braugher’s Take On B99 Season 8
The creator Dan Goor claimed that the social environment in America at the time made them throw away their plan for season 8 and start anew. They even shot the first four episodes again to align with the Black Lives Matter protests that shook the nation. One similar storyline was introduced back in season 4 when Sergeant Terry gets stopped in the streets by a police officer for being a black man.
In that episode, Andre Braugher’s character Captain Holt urges Terry not to file an official complaint against the officer. Holt says so to avoid causing too much ruckus in the department when Terry can change so much by being a part of the system and igniting change from within. Braugher became anxious over this incident after the protests began and the show switched gears in season 8. In a conversation with Variety, he said,
“It might mean that Holt is a staunch defender of the NYPD, or that he tries to burn the whole thing down. I know that he is a pragmatic man; I do know that he’s a loving, [if] robotic person. I’m anxious to see what that’s all about, and I have no idea what Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is going to be because everything’s changed. But I think this is a staff, a cast and a crew that’s willing to take it on and give it our best. I think we have a damn good chance to tell the kinds of stories that heretofore have only been seen on grittier shows.
Braugher was particularly concerned about a comedy show like theirs taking such a serious topic head-on. He wondered if they’d make something they would be very proud of or if everything would fall apart with a lacklustre finale season. The show wanted to end on a good note rather than be a disappointment for the fans.

Andre Braugher as Captain Holt in B99
In addition to his more drama-centric roles, Captain Raymond Holt’s character shines brighter owing to Braugher’s fantastic portrayal with a blend of comedy and heartfelt moments. As a Captain, he always cheered up his squad and encouraged them to be better. From Jake to Rosa to Charles, his support and adoration extended to all members of the Nine-Nine. Dan Goor, the co-creator of the show said,
“Andre brings incredible gravitas and intelligence to Captain Holt, which serves to ground the character and also makes it that much funnier when we write silly, goofy, ridiculous things for him to say and do.”
Brooklyn 99 has been my comfort show when I’m feeling down for years and Andre Braugher’s performance as Captain Holt is a constant highlight. Hugely funny while being the emotional heart of the show and always a commanding presence. RIP sir. pic.twitter.com/NUrCxDmG6N
