Andre Braugher’s Wife and Family: All You Need to Know About the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star
Known for his voice of gravitas and an attractive personality, Andre Braugher made his way into people’s hearts with his iconic Raymond Holt character in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Throughout the show, we saw his relationship evolve with each character on the show, adding newer layers of emotional connection and humor to the story. However, Braugher has more projects to his name other than the comedy cop show.
Andre Braugher’s Career
Born in 1962 in Chicago, Andre Braugher has been in the industry for over 30 years. His deep voice and magnetic appeal make him stand out on screen. Before gaining fame with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he was seen in the show Homicide: Life on the Street and Men of a Certain Age. The beloved actor passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61. He will forever remain etched in the history of cinema with his iconic list of works and projects.
In Homicide, Braugher played the role of a serious cop who has to face the challenge of manning a city destroyed by murders. His role as Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine was on the other end of the spectrum. While he still played the brooding cop commander, the show was a sitcom, adding humor and laughs to every situation.
During the #MeToo phase, he also worked as an executive editor for The New York Times. In an interview with the publication in 2014, he expressed his desire to move out of his childhood home as soon as he could. It seems like it was not a conducive environment for a kid to grow in.
“We lived in a ghetto. I could have pretended I was hard or tough and not a square. I wound up not getting in trouble. I don’t consider myself to be especially wise, but I will say that it’s pretty clear that some people want to get out and some people don’t. I wanted out.”
His father, an employee of the postal service, wanted Braugher to pursue engineering rather than acting. In the 80s and 90s, not many black actors were seen in the mainstream. His father was frustrated by his choice and could not comprehend how Braugher would succeed in the industry.
Braugher answered the concerns with his work. His first major picture role was with big-shot movie stars like Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington in Glory. On the other hand, his last role was in She Said in 2022, the movie that highlighted the New York Times’ journalists’ efforts to expose sexual abuse by Harvey Weinstein. “I’d rather not work than do a part I’m ashamed of,” he said. The myriad of shows and movies helped Braugher build $8 million in wealth and net worth.

Jennifer Allen, Braugher’s longtime publicist confirmed his death. Not many details were disclosed apart from the fact that he was ill during the days leading up to his death. His wife Ami Brabson and his sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley mourn the death of their beloved husband and father. Braugher is also survived by his brother and mother.
Ami Brabson is a well-known actress appearing in major series like Law & Order and All My Children. She has also written songs and acted in stage plays. Braugher and Brabson shared a wonderful relationship and marriage since meeting on the sets of Homicide. They got hitched in 1991 and have since enjoyed the marital bliss.
“I haven’t been in Australia. I haven’t been in Prague. I haven’t been shooting in San Paolo or whatever. I’ve got three boys, and I want them to know me as someone other than the guy who takes them to the circus every once in a while. I wanted to be there through the course of their life because I know how important fathers are.”
Braugher always made time for his family even during hectic shoots and flew back and forth to be with them. He did not believe in the celebrityness of his profession and led a simple life. It just shows how involved and loving he was with his family.
