As Stranger Things Comes to an End, Netflix is Desperate to Start an Addams Family Universe With Wednesday Spinoff
Netflix’s Stranger Things is one of the most successful TV shows by the OTT giant, and they have tried to replicate its success ever since. The closest Netflix came was with Wednesday by Tim Burton. The Jenna Ortega starrer took the world by storm when it first appeared, becoming the second-most watched English-language Netflix series within three weeks of appearing on screen.
It even surpassed Stranger Things with its record of most hours viewed in a week for an English-language Netflix series. Now it seems that as Stranger Things comes to an end, Netflix is getting more and more desperate to recreate the magic again on screen. Recently, news has been flying around that Netflix is planning on a Wednesday spinoff and entering the franchise era by starting an Addams Family universe.
Netflix expands on Wednesday to start an Addams Family universe
When Wednesday came out in November 2022, Netflix could not deny the potential of the show. Added to that, its massive popularity at the time made Jenna Ortega a pop culture phenomenon. So, it was only natural for Netflix to hurry up and greenlight the second season within weeks of its debut.
One of the most iconic characters of the original Addams Family movies, as well as in Wednesday, was that of Uncle Fester. He was always shrouded in mystery, with many stories to tell. The role is played by the hilarious Fred Armisen in the show, who has a rich Saturday Night Live pedigree. According to Bloomberg, Netflix is thinking of another spin-off program that would surround Uncle Fester and his crazy, fun-filled, and equally gothic adventures.
However, this spin-off is only the beginning. According to sources, Netflix wants to build an entire Addams Family franchise with many other Wednesday spin-offs. The spin-off projects would also bring two rival OTTs together, namely Netflix and Prime since Prime Videos held the rights to The Addams Family after it acquired MGM, and it also produced Wednesday under its title.
What will Wednesday season 2 be about?
Season 1 was nothing short of phenomenal. It was a perfect coming-of-age story with Gothic undertones that navigated Wednesday’s story to master her psychic power and save her school, Nevermore, from a raging monster, all while navigating the new relationships she found in her surroundings.
Season 1 ended with many cliffhangers and twists. Also, the audience did not seem to have their fill with just one season. The fans can rest as the showrunners, Miles Millar and Al Gough, revealed that they planned the show as far as four seasons. While talking to TV Line they opened up by saying:
“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles. Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”
With that said, he also said that the show’s primary focus would be Wednesday and her character development since the show is about her and they “really want to focus the show on Wednesday.” However, they “definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”

While talking to Entertainment Tonight, Jenna Ortega pitched in her vision for the show and said:
“I kind of want her to be darker. I want her to get more in the nitty-gritty of things and not play things so safe, because there are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of a competitiveness. Kind of, ‘Man, how’s this guy doing this?’ I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero.”
Jenna Ortega gave a lot of exciting updates regarding the show this year. In Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Jenna Ortega sat down with Elle Fanning and gave a glimpse of what was to come in the upcoming show-
“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more, because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously… we’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
It really seems that the show will take a darker, more gothic turn in the upcoming seasons.
Netflix is aiming to release Wednesday Season 2 in late 2024.
