The original Avatar: The Last Airbender is a perfect example of how animated series can leave a lasting impact on fans, and how some plot points continue to raise questions.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Aang

In the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was disclosed that Aang would be an Avatar from air nomads, but after their home was attacked by the fire nation, the lad remained inside an iceberg for a hundred years. Despite getting frozen for years, Aang came back and fought for peace and balance in the world.

However, Aang’s journey was more short-lived than any other Avatar, as they are known for leading longer lives and protecting the world. He died at the age of 66, and his demise wasn’t solely dependent on the physical and spiritual strain, but also on the unique circumstances faced compared to previous Avatars.

The Mystery Behind Aang’s Premature Death Despite Avatars Living Supremely Long

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans were introduced to the concept of mighty Avatars living exceptionally long lives, but Aang’s fate took an entirely different turn. In the sequel series, it was revealed that the last Airbender only lived for 66 years due to his unimaginable fate and challenges.

Unlike Aang, other Avatars weren’t trapped in an iceberg for 100 years and faced both spiritual and physical strain. Even in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, we saw Aang struggling with the weight of responsibilities put on him, and he always worried about the consequence of failing as the savior. Not only did he spend half of his life worrying about people, but his continuous battles also contributed to his death.

The original series depicted how incredibly Aang exerted the spiritual powers to master all four elements of the world, but little did he know that this would eventually take a toll on his lifespan. Another major reason for Aang’s early death was the makers’ idea to flawlessly introduce the next Avatar Korra from the beginning while also shedding light on Aang’s journey by keeping old characters.

66 years might sound too short, but for Aang it was everything. From saving the world through his determination and zeal to sticking with his best friends until the end, the last airbender ensured peace. After Avatar: The Last Airbender, the sequel series Legend of Korra continued to highlight Aang’s challenging yet worthy fights, especially with Fire Lord Ozai.

Unlike the first series, Legend of Korra received mixed reviews from fans and critics but managed to gain attention. Last month, Netflix released the new live-action of Avatar: The Last Airbender which took no time to reach the first position in the top 10 shows on the streamer. The show has been renewed for two more seasons after fans couldn’t stop demanding it.
