Avengers: Endgame Proved That Vision Was Not Truly Worthy Of Mjolnir
It’s an unarguable fact that Avengers: Endgame is peak pop culture that set the benchmark for all franchises, existing and upcoming. A remarkable feat that took more than a decade in making, Endgame was the culmination of the collective efforts of countless people. Marking the end of an era, Avengers: Endgame paved the path for a generation of new superheroes to take over. Apart from its grand storyline and vivid scenes of epic proportions, Endgame also raised a few questions while answering some. While the movie did prove that Captain America was worthy of Mjolnir, it also subtly hinted that Vision was never worthy of the powerful weapon.
One of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel universe, Mjolnir was extensively used by Thor throughout the movies till it was broken by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Forged using the core of a dying star, Mjolnir possesses numerous capabilities. However, those can only be unlocked by someone who is truly worthy of it. Even as part of his penance, Thor himself was not deemed worthy by Odin due to his arrogance, forcing the God of Thunder to prove himself to once again wield Mjolnir.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was first hinted that Steve Rogers might be able to wield Mjolnir when the super-soldier managed to slightly pick it up where others had failed. However, when Vision, the sentient android created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, managed to entirely pick up the hammer, it was widely believed that another worthy wielder of Mjolnir had arrived. But unfortunately, that was simply not the case.
Since its introduction, it was revealed that only the purest of hearts can be truly worthy of Mjolnir. But according to the original inscription, it had a slightly different meaning than what most people understood.
“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”―Odin
In Thor: Ragnarok, when Thor was on the verge of defeat at the hands of Hela, he gets a vision of Odin where the All-father mentions that Mjolnir was simply created to channelize his powers. In short, Thor never really required Mjolnir to use his powers. That brings us back to the quote where it is mentioned that the person who wields the hammer will possess the power of Thor. Though Vision did manage to lift the hammer, he never actually managed to possess the power of Thor i.e. lightning. So technically, Vision picking up the hammer was only equivalent to an elevator being able to lift the hammer. Even during the final fight with Ultron, the hammer promptly returns to Thor despite Vision being able to lift it. On the other hand, Captain America not only picked up Mjolnir in Avengers: Endgame, he was also able to summon powerful bolts of lightning to fight Thanos.

As a righteous man with a heart of gold and the soul of a warrior, Captain America was the only true wielder of Mjolnir apart from the God of Thunder himself. Vision was undoubtedly a hero in the true sense, even going to the lengths of sacrificing himself to protect the universe. But unfortunately, he was never truly worthy of Mjolnir.
