The recently released picture of Barbie by Warner Bros. Pictures, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and was directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker Greta Gerwig, has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews from both reviewers and viewers. With Christopher Nolan’s eagerly anticipated Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, the film made its box office debut.

Following the premiere of both films, the much-talked-about Barbenheimer phenomenon pushed viewers to see both films on the same day. While Barbie and Oppenheimer both earned favorable reviews, Robbie and Gerwig’s film ultimately prevailed at the box office as it recently crossed the $1 billion threshold.

Barbie enters the top 25 highest-grossing movie list

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie debuted at the box office like a storm everyone was waiting for and embraced every second of it. According to recent reports, the movie has surpassed the record of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel’s record of the highest-grossing live-action movie coming from a female director.

Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, grossed about $1.131 billion whereas Barbie is now close to $1.184 billion. Barbie also received the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie directed by a woman when it was released on 21st July 2023, including being the biggest opening weekend ever for a movie based on a toy.

The success and popularity of the movie also came with the brilliant marketing strategies of the makers and the marketing team of the movie, where everyone kept talking about Barbie. It was recently reported that the movie starring an exceptionally talented cast of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is Warner Bros’ second biggest movie worldwide and has now entered the list of top 25 highest-grossing movies ever.

Did Barbie’s success overshadow Oppenheimer’s success?

It was very natural and expected from the audience to make comparisons between the two movies-apart because they were released on the same day and when both movies received positive responses from the audience and critics, Robbie’s movie did gross a little more than was expected.

Fans of the movie took to social media to share their views on the movie, entering the list of the top 25 highest-grossing movies ever. One of them wrote, “Barbie clears open-mid”, whereas another user seemed very optimistic as they mentioned, “And it still has a few solid weeks left. Can probably push top 15 or 10.”

A user noted, “Excellent movie, amazing cast and crew! Deserves all the praise and success they’ve received!” Another user mentioned that this is peak cinema, whereas a lot of users mentioned everyone on the cast and crew of the movie to thank the marketing team, because of which the movie was known to the world. A user pointed out, “WB is the luckiest company right now. They were down badly until this movie came out.”

Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy also managed to break some records, including being on the list of the top 10 highest-grossing R-rated movies, which managed to gross over $649 million on a budget of $100 million.

Margot Robbie was not the first choice for Barbie

As surprising as it sounds, actress Margot Robbie, who back in 2018 went to Mattel to acquire rights for the movie and got Gerwig to write and direct the movie while she helmed the producer’s part along with starring as the leading lady role, was not the first choice for the character.

In a recent interview with Vogue, the actress revealed that instead, it was Wonder Woman who was the first choice to play the stereotypical Barbie in the movie. She said,

Margot Robbie was not the first choice for Barbie

“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.”

The reason why Gadot was not seen as Barbie in the movie is because of scheduling conflicts. Talking about the sequel, there have been reports that some talks are going on about the sequel of the movie but nothing can be confirmed as of now.

Barbie is playing in theatres worldwide.
