SUMMARY
  • 'Captain America: Brave New World' will finally address Celestial Tiamut from 'Eternals', who has been largely ignored so far.
  • The lack of references to Tiamut since 'Eternals' may be because of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the production and release of Phase 4 projects.
  • Tiamut's remains open up new possibilities, including the speculation that it could be the source of adamantium.

Phase 4 of the MCU had quite a bumpy ride compared to previous phases released by Marvel Studios. From highs like Loki to some lows like She-Hulk, it had gone through all. Among them, one particular plot detail has been ignored by almost all the projects in Phases 4 and 5 until now.

Eternals was one of the most important yet underperforming films of Phase 4, and it introduced us to ancient cosmic beings and a massive, world-altering event. But now, it looks like Captain America: Brave New World might be bringing that forgotten storyline back into the spotlight.

Eternals brought a number of immortal characters and then also revealed that there was this massive space entity (celestial) Tiamut, growing inside Earth. Although the Eternals succeeded in preventing Tiamut from fully emerging and destroying the planet, they failed to prevent his giant stone hand and part of his head from emerging out of the Indian Ocean.

An event that big usually becomes a global headline the next day, but to most of the MCU, it seemed as if they somehow forgot that that actually happened. Apart from a very brief momentary reference in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, it’s like the whole Tiamut incident never happened.

This silence had fans scratching their heads. But it looks like Captain America: Brave New World is finally ready to address the elephant in the room. There is a brief look at Tiamut in the trailer for the film, where Sam Wilson is flying by his body.

Since Eternals, which was released in November 2021, Marvel has released 19 other projects, of which 7 were movies and the rest were Disney+ series. Although not every project is set in the exact chronological order of the MCU timeline, it is assumed that the events of Eternals took place in the summer of 2024 in the MCU.

One reason for the lack of mention of celestials and Tiamut might be that most of the Phase 4 projects, including Eternals, were released during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the filming and production were not happening in chronological order.

The appearance of Tiamut in Brave New World opens up whole new possibilities. It finally hints at the larger narrative of the events of Eternals. This could be the MCU’s way of course-correcting and bringing the Eternals‘ storyline back, or it might be setting up something even bigger.

How Might Tiamut’s Remains Play Its Role in the MCU?

What does a dead celestial mean to shield-wielding Captain America and the rest of the MCU? There have been many speculations and theories about how Tiamut’s body will play an important role in shaping the MCU’s future.

Firstly, there are speculations that Tiamut is not just a giant space corpse but possibly the best place to look for resources. The kind of resources that cause world governments and political leaders to fight for them. A popular theory says that Tiamut’s remains might be the source of adamantium. Just like MCU got vibranium from a meteor that landed on Wakanda, adamantium is another such metal that is as tough and durable as vibranium, if not more.

It might be a possibility that every country started fighting over pieces of a cosmic entity, like a superhero version of a gold rush, and the synopsis of the movie also hints at such an event. Sam Wilson might find himself caught in the middle of an international resource war, all while trying to fill the shoes of Captain America.

Other than that, some speculations also say that Tiamut Island will be the MCU’s version of Genosha, the mutant island from the comics. It’s a bit of a stretch, but stranger things have happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The appearance of Tiamut can also be a strategy to introduce X-men in the MCU in a more natural manner. If adamantium is to be included at that, then why not wait for it to be bonded to an iconic X-Man’s skeleton next?

Finally, the end of Eternals cannot be ignored. Arishem, the Prime Celestial, was planning to judge humanity based on the memories of Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos. Brave New World might give fans an update on this cosmic trial.

Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Eternals is available to stream on Disney+.
