  • His return to the MCU could be profitable for the upcoming saga.

With Robert Downey Jr. marking his Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback, the swirling report is that Captain America actor Chris Evans is also gearing up to return to the burgeoning universe. Marvel is going back to the basics, the tricks that led to the studio’s unparalleled success in the first place. Given the recent failures and bombs at the box office, Marvel does not seem to be in a position to take risks and put their position in danger.

Though Evans’ role in the movie remains unknown, it isn’t stopping fans from speculating what character he could play in the upcoming phase of the MCU. His return is set to infuse new excitement into the franchise much like the emotion ignited by Downey Jr’s return announcement. Before we learn who Evans will play in the movie, let’s explore some possible roles that Evans can take up in Avengers: Doomsday.

Captain America

Chris Evans might just don his iconic American flag of a suit for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though he was an old man by the end of Avengers: Endgame when he went back in time to return the Infinity Stones, there’s a possibility that Evans reprises his righteous role of the war hero in a couple of flashbacks in Avengers: Doomsday.

The new set of Avengers might also plan a time heist to go back in time and get a lesson or two in tackling otherworldly villains from the former leader of the pack. The plot of Avengers: Doomsday is also being kept under wraps for now, and wholly depends on how the movies leading up to it might turn out.

Marvel is no stranger to changing gears in case a particular direction does not work out. So, it is a looming possibility that the plot of the movie gets finalized close to the production schedule.

Hydra Supreme

Fans loved Evans in The Gray Man as the quintessential creepy villain opposite Ryan Gosling in the Russo Brothers’ directorial. Hence, the theory of Evans appearing as Hydra Supreme in Avengers: Doomsday seems highly exciting. Evans has already proved his incredible range in portraying both spectrums of a person’s character from a righteous hero to a despicable villain.

Hydra Supreme is the evil version of Captain America, under the influence and control of the evil organization. He was brought up by the organization to carry out different missions and he eventually went on to conduct a national takeover in the comics. He is the ultimate alter ego of the Steve Rogers we know and love. Evans playing this role in the upcoming movie will surely get massive cheers and roars in theatres.

We already saw a glimpse of the same in Avengers: Endgame when he sayus Hail Hydra to the team of guards to get the mission completed in time.

Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch

Evans’ role in the recent Deadpool & Wolverine garnered immense appreciation from the masses. The role was kept an absolute surprise even though speculations continued till the very day of the movie’s release. The actor played Johnny Storm in the earlier iterations of the Fantastic Four series and he reprised that role in Ryan Reynolds’ blockbuster.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Evans might just be seen in this role from the same timeline as we saw in Deadpool & Wolverine. Though his death in the end of the movie complicates matters for the Russo brothers, but we believe they can come up with an effective plan to override that event in the timeline or again go with the flashback appearance approach.

One Above All

Bringing in Evans under the guise of presenting One Above All, the omnipotent evil entity of the Marvel world is another amazing opportunity. This character could set the stage for the next phase of the MCU after all’s done and dusted with Doctor Doom. Evans could play One Above All when he is under the Steve Rogers disguise to send a message to the Avengers which they will unknowingly believe.

This character blends the positive and negative elements of Rogers’ character, giving Evans a more vivid spectrum to work with. One Above All is a shapeshifting being known for his evil plans for the world, a step beyond the likes of Kang and Thanos. Thus, if Marvel plans to make him the next big villain in the upcoming phase, this strategy might prove most useful.

Red Skull

In contrast to the mighty brave and ethical character of Steve Rogers, Evans playing the Red Skull in Avengers: Doomsday would be an extraordinary juxtaposition. The villain proved to be an impediment in Captain America and the Avengers’ path especially since he was guarding the Soul Stone.

Red Skull could be brought back in the upcoming phase with Evans being behind the horrific appearance. Though this would require some smart storytelling on Anthony and Joe Russo’s part, but it’s nothing they are not capable of.

There are a plethora of opportunities for including Evans in the upcoming Avengers saga while ensuring the success of the movies at the same time. With the varied multiverses and timelines, Marvel has a great universe at their disposal that can make any vision come true and every possibility become a reality.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to premiere on May 1, 2026.
