SUMMARY
  • 'Creature Commandos' featured the apparent demise of Clayface in Episode 5.
  • Clayface's comic book history suggests his malleable form and regenerative powers could allow him to return.
  • Despite James Gunn’s initial hesitation, a standalone Clayface movie has been green-lit, set to release under DC Elseworlds.

Creature Commandos has officially kicked off the DCU and brought several characters into James Gunn’s new universe. The animated show is an adaptation of Amanda Waller’s black ops team led by Rick Flag Sr. as they fight against supernatural threats.

One of the many highlights of the show is the revelation of the first major Batman villain, Clayface. Although his appearance in the show has been short-lived, his abilities and his history in the comic book universe suggest that there might be more to his story.

Clayface’s apparent demise in Creature Commandos might not be his end

Creature Commandos episode 5 revealed that Clayface had been in disguise as Professor Aisla MacPherson, who had supposedly seen Circe’s vision of the apocalypse along with Amanda Waller. This came to light when Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein found the real MacPherson’s body, which led to a fight against Clayface.

The fight showed Clayface’s ability as he fought against both Flag and Frankenstein. The battle finally appeared to be over when Frankenstein used the electrical wires to electrocute and blast both himself and Clayface, which left the villain scattered on the floor as chunks of clay.

But the comic book history suggests that Clayface is not someone who can die a conventional death. The character’s powers and malleable form make him immune to what seems to be fatal attacks. His capacity to split into a many-bodied person and reform after a serious injury has time and again been shown in the comics.

One particular example is Katherine Karlo– Clayface’s daughter-like creation who also shares her powers. Such storylines confirmed that the form of Clayface could be divided into several bodies, which were capable of acting on their own. This opens up the possibility that the Clayface seen in Creature Commandos may not have been the only active version of the character.

That electrical attack that appeared to kill him might have just disintegrated his matter, and he might be able to reassemble at some point in the future. This wouldn’t be the first time Clayface has come back from the dead, or at least returned in a way that no one was expecting.

Will Clayface return to DCU?

DC Studios and James Gunn have approved a Clayface movie set to release in 2026 with horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan on writing duties. However, the movie will be set in DC Elseworlds instead of DCU.

In an interview with io9 (via Gizmodo), Gunn revealed that he did not have in mind the plan of doing the Clayface movie.

I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie. Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie.’ But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.

However, Gunn also talked about rumors and speculations that fans keep on making about future DC projects. He said,

There are lots of things that are getting reported that I haven’t green-lit and I haven’t said okay too. Some of those are true in terms of they’re in development, and some of them are not true. [And just] because they’re in development, that doesn’t mean I’m going to make that movie. There’s a lot of things people seem to be counting on that it may be unwise to count on.

With a solo film in the works ensuring his appearances in more DC future projects, it is safe to assume that the story of the shape-shifting villain is only getting started. Several characters have been shown seemingly dying in the DC to make a comeback later, and as far as DCU’s Clayface is concerned, his apparent death might be a clever setup for his surprise return.

Creature Commandos is now streaming on Max.

Clayface will be released in theaters on September 11, 2026.
