Daredevil is set to make a much-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After audiences briefly saw Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and later in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Daredevil: Born Again will be his lead series. But this isn’t going to be just another superhero show.

There are some speculations that the Man Without Fear will not only go beyond the Netflix show but will also surpass it. Is it possible that Daredevil: Born Again will push the boundaries of what people don’t usually expect from a Disney+ series?

Daredevil: Born Again is not only about featuring the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock or Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. These two rival characters will attempt to work as allies to serve New York, leaving behind their dark alter egos, but their pasts catch up with them.

Moreover, the test screenings of Born Again have been getting some great reactions. According to insider reports, the show will be even darker and grittier than the Netflix series. That is quite a big claim considering how dark and intense the Netflix series was.

Born Again could be nine episodes for the first season, with each running up to one hour. Test screenings further revealed some cameos and a funeral scene in the first episode. Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, teased fans in a recent interview at ABC’s On The Red Carpet Storytellers Spotlight, saying,

Imagine if New York City was as intricate and problematic, and scary as the world of ‘Game of Thrones. All these forces vying for control, and it can be really hopeful at times, and really violent at times, and dark-but also there’s light at the end of the tunnel if you could just fight for it.

However, similar statements were made before the premiere of Moon Knight as well. Although the show had some action sequences and intense scenes, none of them were too dark to be shocked as a Disney+ viewer. Despite that, in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes TV, Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio said,

There’s one thing in particular that my character does that I can’t believe made it into the cut.

It might be possible that Disney is finally embracing more mature content and darker characters after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. However, only time will tell whether Daredevil: Born Again tops the previous Netflix series or not.

Muse Could Push Daredevil: Born Again to the Edge

A significant part of why Daredevil: Born Again is expected to go even darker than its earlier Netflix version is the introduction of Muse, one of the most vicious antagonists Daredevil came across in the comic books.

Muse is an artist turned serial killer who debuted in 2016. He uses the blood and body parts of his victims to paint murals on walls. Having such a twisted character is a set-up for a very mature and violent series.

In the comics, Muse is like a sensory vacuum, which makes it very hard for Daredevil to use his senses to track him down during combat. Combined with this ability is his super strength and speed, which makes him one of Daredevil’s most formidable villains.

Muse’s actions in this series might be inspired by Daredevil and the Punisher. His bizarre murals of these vigilantes might be used by Fisk as part of his mayoral campaign. These might explain the TV-MA rating of the series, making it one of the grittiest entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in March 2025.
