- Rumors of a cameo by Robert Downey Jr. have circulated, but fans can expect the post-credit scene to stay true to the franchise's style.
Spoiler Alert!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming up with its most anticipated movie in recent times. Deadpool & Wolverine will be the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, and it will be much different from its previous parts as Hugh Jackman is reprising his iconic role as Wolverine this time.
Although Deadpool 3 will be much different from Deadpool 1 and 2, one thing is likely to be common. Since the inception of MCU, post-credit scenes are something that keeps audiences glued to their seats even after the movie is over, and Deadpool & Wolverine will follow the same pattern as its predecessors.
Deadpool’s Post-Credit History and MCU Traditions
According to The Direct, Deadpool & Wolverine will have a single post-credit scene, and it will follow the pattern set by the first two Deadpool movies, as both featured only one post-credit scene.
The first Deadpool post-credit scene paid homage to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Deadpool broke the fourth wall in a bathrobe and teased the audience about a potential sequel, hinting at Cable’s appearance.
Deadpool 2 took a different approach. Its post-credit scene showed Deadpool traveling in the past to fix his and Ryan Reynolds‘ mistakes, like killing his infamous X-Men Origins: Wolverine character, preventing Reynolds from doing Green Lantern, bringing back his girlfriend from the past, saving Peter from X-Force, dealing with baby Hitler, and so on.
However, MCU has often gone with multiple post-credit scenes, usually a mid-credit and then a post-credit scene. Films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured multiple post-credit scenes, while Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok included both mid-credit and post-credit scenes.
These were used for plot setups as well, like the introduction of Thanos in The Avengers in the mid-credit scene and the shawarma scene in the post-credits. Similarly, Captain Marvel used its mid-credit scene to show Carol Danvers meeting the Avengers, while the post-credit scene showed Goose coughing up the Tesseract.
Deadpool’s meta-humor and MCU’s interconnected storytelling increase curiosity about what Deadpool & Wolverine might offer. It might lean more towards the comedic root of the franchise, but can also tease Deadpool’s future in the broader MCU landscape.
Rumors About Deadpool & Wolverine Post-Credit Scene
There have been many reports and rumors about what fans might expect from Deadpool 3‘s post-credit scene. Some are quite ambitious, while others proved inconsequential.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, there were talks about a Robert Downey Jr. cameo in the post-credit scene. This would have been a setup for Avengers: Secret Wars and a payoff to another scene in the film. However, this plan reportedly didn’t work out, although the mentioned scene is still in the film.
Another source, Cryptic HD QUALITY, suggests that the final post-credit scene isn’t “MIND BLOWING” and doesn’t set up future storylines. The film is self-contained and probably won’t require multiple viewings to understand everything.
Although these reports might lower fan expectations, they also mean that the post-credit scene will likely stay true to the Deadpool franchise’s style. Fans can probably expect something fun and possibly meta, rather than an MCU plot setup.
However, plans for post-credit scenes can change during production. The fact that a Robert Downey Jr. cameo was even considered shows that Marvel was open to big surprises. Even if that idea didn’t work out, it leaves the door open for other unexpected scenes.
Deadpool & Wolverine is releasing in theaters on July 26, 2024.
