“Disheartening to lose a legend on first day of 2024”: Fans Mourn the Death of Mama Coco Actor Ana Ofelia Murguía Who Passed Away at 90

With the passing of such beloved celebrities, fans feel as though they lost someone very close to them. The last day of the year was marked by yet another sad event with the death of Mexican actor Ana Ofelia Murguía. Known best for voicing the great-grandmother Mama Coco in the Disney movie Coco, the actress will be revered for all her valuable contributions to the industry.

Cause of Death
Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and National Theater Company confirmed Ana Ofelia Murguía’s death on Sunday at the age of 90. The spokesperson did not specify the cause of death. In a statement, the director of the institute Lucina Jiménez López described her career spanning an entire era.

“With deep sadness we regret the sensitive death of the first actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the @CNTeatromx del #INBAL and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico,” the tweet read. “We send condolences and warm hugs to his family and friends.”

The movie became a huge phenomenon as it introduced the world to authentic Mexican culture where people are celebrated even after death. The people of Mexico will definitely remember the actress in their prayers and celebrate her passage to the netherworld every year. After receiving her education from the National Institute of Fine Arts and National Theater Company in Mexico, Murguía was first seen in a Mexican movie called Transit in 1964, even though the theatre world saw a glimpse of her talents back in 1954. The 2018 episode of José José: El Príncipe de la Canción marked the last appearance of the actress.

Worked on over 100 projects, Murguía is an actress who is a cut above the rest. In 1979, 1986 and 1996, she won the Best Supporting Actress award at Ariel Awards which is similar to the Oscars in stature.
Even though the world came to know about the veteran actress in 2017 through the Mexico-centered movie Coco, Murguía was already very well-known in her home country. Coco brought the actress into the limelight and made the entire world fall in love with her portrayal of the great-grandmother.
