Disney has a proven track record of successfully transforming beloved animated films into live-action movies. Surprisingly, there has been a recent announcement that the story of the long-haired princess Rapunzel will be retold. The DisInsider on YouTube has reported that the much-loved animated film Tangled is slated to receive the live-action treatment. The news comes as a shock, as there hasn’t even been any official declaration from Disney up to this point.

Florence Pugh eyed for Rapunzel in Tangled live-action remake

It is being speculated that Disney’s most popular animated movie, Tangled, is set to receive its live-action treatment. According to movie scooper Daniel Richtman (per Geek Vibes Nation), the live-action remake is moving forward as renowned actress Florence Pugh is being considered for the role of Rapunzel. The claim hasn’t been verified by Disney yet, but it’s already making waves on social media. It’s unclear whether the Oppenheimer actress has actually had an official talk with Disney and how far the movie is currently in development. And there hasn’t been any knowledge about the director and other crew members attached to the upcoming movie.

Tangled released in 2010, delves into the story of a magical long-haired princess named  Rapunzel, who yearns to leave her secluded tower and accepts the aid of an intruder to take her out into the world, which she has never seen. Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the screenplay of the movie was panned by Dan Fogelman. Mandy Moore provided the voice of Rapunzel, while the voice cast also included other notable names like Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman, and Jeffrey Tambor. The film was critically acclaimed and garnered multiple Academy Award nominations.

Tangled‘s success sparks plans for live-action adaptation

Tangled earned $592 million in worldwide box office revenue. Considering the studio effectively translated its iconic animated films into live-action successes like Aladdin and The Lion King, it’s no surprise that the popularity of Tangled has inspired them to take on a live-action version. The Lion King holds the top rank, grossing 1.6 billion worldwide is the highest-grossing live-action of Disney’s animated remakes, with Beauty and the Beast collecting 1.3 billion worldwide and the most recent remake of The Little Mermaid has received decent reviews.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the animated film Moana would be getting a live-action remake. The studio has teamed with Dwayne Johnson to develop a live-action remake of its 2016 animated musical sensation. Other notable classic live-action Disney remakes are Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians, and Mulan.
