SUMMARY
  • A wild fan theory speculates that 'Game of Thrones' exists within the 'Dune' universe, linking both worlds through Bene Gesserit's experiments.
  • The two universes share similarities like noble house conflicts, bloodline manipulation, and mystical abilities.
  • 'Dune: Prophecy' showrunner welcomes comparisons to 'Game of Thrones,' acknowledging its cultural impact.

The Dune universe has always presented a combined story of power struggles and its philosophical reflection in its own unique way. Now, Dune: Prophecy has expanded on the universe that Frank Herbert created. On the other hand, Game of Thrones still remains one of the best TV shows due to its storytelling and power-hungry family battles.

The sci-fi and fantasy genres have often been known to interconnect different cinematic universes that attract a wide range of audiences. As for the aforementioned two series, one might think that they are quite different. However, there is a wild fan theory that speculates that Game of Thrones might actually happen in the Dune universe.

Dune: Prophecy is a prequel, taking place 10,000 years before the events of the Dune movies. It tells the story of Valya and Tula Harkonnen set in a political landscape of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.

Talking about similarities, both Dune: Prophecy and Game of Thrones feature conflicts between noble houses- the Harkonnens and Atreides in Dune, and the Lannisters and Starks in Game of Thrones. Both shows depend on prophecies to drive their narrative.

However, one of the wildest theories on Reddit states that the world of Game of Thrones was an experimental outpost of the Bene Gesserit. This theory also says that dragons are the symbol of fire’s ultimate power, which was seeded by the Sisterhood to test humanity’s resilience.

The concept of bloodline manipulation seems to align with Bene Gesserit’s genetic experiments. This theory also proposes that Emilia Clarke‘s Daenerys Targaryen may be a product of a long-term Bene Gesserit experiment– a potential next evolutionary stage for humans, shaped to be immune to certain powers.

The theory also points to some potential plot connections, like the Faceless Men’s ability to change faces, which is similar to the Dune universe’s Face Dancers. Besides that, Desmond Hart is also considered to be the canon that connects the two universes as well, according to the speculation.

Apart from the wild fan theory, there are some apparent similarities that connect both shows. Both universes focus on risks of the messianic leadership, manipulations of bloodlines, and the interactions between political power and mystical abilities.

Showrunner Alison Schapker speaks about the comparison between Dune: Prophecy and Game of Thrones

Alison Schapker, the showrunner of Dune: Prophecy, has a rather straightforward way of looking at the comparisons to Game of Thrones. Instead of being defensive about her show, she takes it as a compliment, as she acknowledges the massive impact of Game of Thrones in the world of TV.

In an interview with The Wrap, she said,

It may be a very apt comparison. On the other hand, I do think there’s a lot of aspects to Dune that are specific to Dune. I hope that when we get beyond just the sense that who’s on the throne matters – which it does – that there’s other aspects that’ll start to differentiate. The ‘in space’ part should get to be more rounded out for people.

Schapker also believes that there are qualities and certain aspects that will set Dune apart from others. However, the question that comes to both fanbases’ minds is whether Dune: Prophecy can indeed be the next Game of Thrones.

Although it can be said that no TV series has managed to earn the same global status since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, Dune: Prophecy has some things in its favor. It is set within the already popular Dune movie franchise by Denis Villeneuve and has also inherited the fans from Frank Herbert’s novels.

Dune: Prophecy and all seasons of Game of Thrones are available to stream on Max.
