Many actors enter the movie industry as kids and grow up in the public’s eye. As they get older, they realise the impact of media scrutiny on their lives and take a hiatus. Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermoine in the massively successful Harry Potter franchise, took a break from acting after being a part of Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019.

Emma Watson is not just an actress. She is a sustainability trailblazer, UN Women Goodwill ambassador, and supports transgender rights. She is outspoken and does not shy away from expressing her opinion on a crucial matter. Recently, she appeared on the cover of the British Vogue magazine and spoke about her journey in activism and if she would be returning to the screens soon. Given that she has been acting since the tender age of 10, it was understandable that Watson needed a break to enjoy life.

“I’m just so glad that I did [step away from acting] because I have this feeling of having my own voice and creative space and sovereignty in some way that I don’t think I did before – more autonomy. I’m so glad that I allowed things to be messy for a minute and to really allow myself to not know [what’s next], because the knowing that I’ve come to, I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

It appears the British actress is not yet ready to say goodbye to acting altogether. Talking about her tryst with direction and writing, Watson emphasises the need to explore that part of her skillset and expand on that.

“I just see myself as wanting to expand what I do and being able to be in things that I have written or directed or produced. To direct something that I’d written one day, that would make me pretty excited. To really be at the start of a project takes time. Films can be decades in the making, finding it and writing it and putting it together. I don’t see it as a closing down. I see it as an opening up.”

We don’t know if she will be acting anytime soon or if she has already signed any projects lately. She is content with venturing into business by launching a gin brand along with her brother. Watson appears to have too many balls in the air that keep her busy year-round.

Watson also speaks about inner peace and happiness as compared to the success she receives from her work. She feels at peace now, after 5 years away from the cameras. The 33-year-old actress is now working towards enjoying the little things in life while planning for the bigger picture. She reveals she has been working on directing and writing, hence being behind the camera for a change. Watson directed a commercial for the brand Prada previously and is completing her MA in writing.

“Because I’m in a career that moves very quickly, the decision to take time to do these things felt like a very big decision. [Choosing] to go back and write and study and get behind the camera was terrifying for me because I’d never done it before. I had always been in front of the camera; I’d always been an actor.”

The actress has kept herself busy by honing her skills off-camera and seeing what else she can try her hands at. Reportedly, she has penned a play as well, but nobody knows any details regarding the same. Watson has gained thousands of fans across the world with her charming on-screen presence, and fans can’t wait to see what she will bring to the table as a director and writer.
