Miya Cech, the actress stepping into Toph Beifong’s shoes, is quite the catch. Her full name is Miyako, and she’s a rising star of Chinese and Japanese American descent. Cech has appeared in popular series like Beef, Young Rock, and The Santa Clauses. You might also know her from the movie You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

But this role as Toph is extra special for her. Why? Because Toph is unlike any character she’s played before. Cech describes Toph as “completely unique,” and who could disagree? In her own words, Cech said she is thrilled to represent her Chinese heritage in this beloved role. She told Tudum:

One of the most incredible aspects of this show is the diversity of the Asian cultures in the Avatar: The Last Airbender world. Even though the universe is fantasy, it feels like every culture is represented in some way and tied to the history and traditions of that culture or country.

The show’s producers, Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan, felt a spark when they saw Miya’s auditions. They sifted through countless submissions but knew she was the one. “Miya is our Toph!” they declared.
