While Episode 9 of Sakamoto Days was the first episode to introduce the character to us by name, Episode 5 of the series, titled “Source of Strength” was when he first appeared in the show.

The moment, while only lasting a few seconds, was enough for us to get a peek into his psyche, by showing us how frighteningly meticulous and mysterious he can be.

Slur, also known as ‘X’, with the moniker being given to him because of his habit of leaving an ‘X’ mark at his crime scenes, is a man shrouded in mystery, with even the Order knowing little about him.

Even the official anime page of Sakamoto Days has zero information about him.

Slur, born Kei Uzuki, has a dark and tragic past that scarred him. While he was initially portrayed as a shy and introverted student of the JCC, who only killed when he deemed it necessary, his character took a complete U-turn with the orchestrated death of a close friend and other subsequent revelations.

These incidents would forever alter his state of mind, resulting in him developing an alter ego and turning into Slur.

Every antagonist has an objective that they set out to achieve, and Slur’s primary objective is to annihilate the JAA (Japan Assassin Association). He believes that by destroying JAA, he will be able to build a better society on its remains.

This objective and his ability to manipulate individuals through his words have made him a sort of messiah within the assassin community. It also surrounded him with several loyal and skilled assassins, like Kashima, who all brought their unique abilities to his cause.

His manipulation is so deep that they are even willing to sacrifice themselves for his cause.

But just because Slur surrounds himself with his followers does not mean he slacks off when it comes to fighting. As a former student of JCC, Slur is a master combatant and tactician, having sufficient combat knowledge to know when to retreat.

He is an assassin in the purest sense, being silent and deadly. He is also very intimidating and doesn’t shy away from showing bloodlust towards his enemies, enough to freeze them in their tracks. While this side of his may portray him as ruthless, he is surprisingly caring towards his comrades, displaying a complex duality.

Another aspect that makes Slur a unique antagonist and adds to his mystery is his rare medical condition, Situs Inversus, due to which his internal organs are mirrored from their usual positions. In the story, this condition allows him to survive fatal injuries.

All these aspects of the character and his connection to Sakamoto make him a very special antagonist and with his introduction, Sakamoto Days is sure to elevate the stakes, and viewers can bet that they will get to witness some intense confrontations and revelations.

Sakamoto Days is available to stream on Netflix.
