The True Pronunciation of ‘Dothraki’

For years, people have been saying ‘Doth-rakee,’ but Martin’s video reveals it’s actually ‘Doth-ra-kai.’ Looks like we’ve all been saying it wrong! The 76-year-old is seen saying:

The problem is that Viserys doesn’t really understand the Dothraki and that also he’s arrogant. He has a sense of entitlement, he doesn’t understand the Dothraki culture. Dothraki are not merchant, they do not buy or sell, they trade favors and do it in their own times.

The Dothraki are a roaming group living on the huge grassy plains of the Dothraki Sea in Essos. They love raiding and fighting and move across the steppe in large groups called Khalasars. The Dothraki mostly trade and raid to get what they need. They’re expert horse riders and use a curvy sword called an arakh.

In Dothraki society, men are in charge and focus on fighting, while women have a lower status and are expected to handle caregiving and raising children. The people of Westeros nickname the Dothraki ‘horselords’ because they’re always on horseback and are known for their fierce warrior ways.

The Beliefs of the Dothraki

The Dothraki worship the Horse God, or Great Stallion, because horses are such a big part of their lives. They believe in a prophecy about the Stallion Who Mounts the World, which foretells that a Dothraki man will become the greatest of all Khals and unite the tribes.

The Dothraki first show up in Game of Thrones when their fierce leader, Khal Drogo, visits Magister Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos to check out his future bride, Daenerys Targaryen. The Dothraki are known for their long braids, which show their victories. Drogo, who remains undefeated, is a prominent example.
