Spare by the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, has garnered a lot of media attention. He chronicles his life in this book – from his mother’s passing through the passing of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022. He talks about his complicated connection with his brother but also spends a lot of time on his own sadness and healing.

Outsiders may have thought Prince Harry, 38, and Prince William, 40, were always close because of the passing of their mother Princess Diana when Prince Harry was only 12 and Prince William was 15 years old. However, Prince Harry discussed how his brother intended to harm his reputation in Spare.

What Did Prince Harry Reveal About His Brother?

In his memoir, Prince Harry refers to Prince William as his “beloved brother and arch-nemesis” and recalls verbal and even physical disputes between them. “There has always been this competition between us weirdly,” Harry said. “Again, I think it really plays into, or is played, by the heir/spare.”

Prince Harry responded in the affirmative when asked if he believed Prince William was envious of his role as the spare. “But I have more freedom than he does, right?” Harry said. “So his life is planned out for him. I have more flexibility to be able to choose the life that I wanted.”

Prince Harry said that while the typical path for the spare is to sit “in the monarch’s shadow,” he wanted to carve a different path.

Prince Harry describes a physical assault that happened in 2019 in his writing. After calling Meghan Markle “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive,” according to Prince Harry, the argument heated up.

He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast,” Harry writes, “So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripped my necklace, and knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.

When he left, Prince Harry says, his brother “turned and called back: ‘You don’t need to tell Meg about this.'” Prince Harry replied with, “‘You mean that you attacked me?” To which Prince William reportedly said, “I didn’t attack you, Harold.”

Prince Harry alleges in Spare that members of the royal institution spread untrue information to the media and failed to correct it, especially about Meghan Markle, putting a harsh spotlight on her in order to defend other royals.

In one instance, Prince Harry alleges that palace representatives neglected to refute tabloid reports that Meghan Markle had allegedly caused Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, to cry in the months prior to the Sussexes’ 2018 nuptials. Meghan Markle has acknowledged this in earlier interviews and according to Prince Harry’s account in Spare, it was Middleton who offended Markle before apologizing.

[The press] pitched the Waleses, which Kate and William are now, against the Sussexes, me and my wife. They always pitched us against each other,” Harry said. “They pitched Kate and Meghan against each other.

The Duke of Cambridge called the Duke of Sussex “A Slob”

The book details a dispute between the two, which Prince Harry alleges was brought on by remarks Prince William made about Meghan Markle. The Duke of Cambridge criticized Markle in his letter to his younger brother, calling her “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”

Speaking about a joint interview with his elder brother, Prince Harry said:

While sharing that cottage we agreed to a rare joint interview, in an airplane hangar at Shawbury, during which Willy griped endlessly about my habits. Harry’s a slob, he said. Harry snores. I turned and gave him a look. Was he joking?”

He began with:

I laughed as well because we often bantered like that, but when I look back on it now, I couldn’t help but wonder if there wasn’t something else at play. I was training to get to the front lines, the same place Willy had been training to get, but the Palace had scuttled his plans.”

He also added:

The Spare, sure, let him run around a battlefield like a chicken with its head cut off, if that’s what he likes. But the Heir? No.”

Spare: Why Prince Harry Opted This Title?

The phrase that inspired the book’s title is common in royal and aristocratic circles. Aristocratic households in which the first-born is the successor to the throne and the second-born is there to help his elder sibling are referred to as “The Heir and the Spare” in ancient parlance.

As Prince Harry notes, his own family, including Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, present King Charles, and Princess Diana, referred to him as such. It wasn’t only a slang term used by the media and outsiders of the palace.

The memoir’s title, which references a remark King Charles purportedly made to Princess Diana after she gave birth to their second son, “Now that you have given me an heir and a spare, my work is done,” follows the release of the recent Meghan and Harry documentary on Netflix. The argument between the two princes is a shocking scene in this remarkable volume.
