The second season occurs three years after Jung-jae’s character Gi-hun wins the game and gives up on his dream to go to the United States when he sees the recruiter playing ddakji with a stranger at the airport. Gi-hun realized how the games have used the people as fodder for entertainment. Jung-jae’s character is all set to re-enter the dangerous game, but this time he has an agenda. A Reddit user recently shared their theory about the poster of the series that was recently released.

Squid Game 2: Fan theory teases a new Korean traditional game

Netflix’s Squid Game 2 is one of the highly anticipated dystopian survival thriller shows that is going to see a new set of players making their way into the world of dangerous games to survive and earn the prize of ₩45.6 billion. Lee Jung-Jae, Wi Ha-joon, Lee Byung-hun, and Gong Yoo from the previous season are going to join the new recruitments.

The recently released trailer saw Gong Yoo, who plays the recruiter on the show, gearing up and getting ready to find people who are financially vulnerable and would be willing to do whatever it takes for the money. It’s no surprise that after the success of season one, fans are just waiting to see how things will unfold in season two and what games will be included.

Stills from the upcoming show that were released a couple of days ago have had fans wondering about what they could mean, especially the one that shows a large playground with rainbows tracks curving around. A Reddit user, however, shared a theory about the rainbow concentric circles and said,

The image depicts a Korean traditional game named gulleongsui, or as Western people call it, hoop rolling. My guess is that one of the games will involve rolling the hoop within one of the rainbow lanes. Once you go off tracks and exit the lane, you’re dead.

The user further shared that they are pretty confident about their theory, adding that it’s not only interesting but also suspenseful. One can depict the player trying to knock each other’s hoops while trying to make sure that their hoops stay.

It’s very hard to say what games will be included in season 2, but it can be said with assurance that it’s going to be bigger and more bloody, and as the tagline says, ‘The Game Will Not Stop’. However, Gi-hun’s return to the games can prove to be more complicated than expected, as he is aware of the mechanics and how the game works.

Talking about the games, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared with EW that he wishes for the games to be more universally recognized. He added that the new kids’ game included in Squid Game 2 is going to be both easy to understand and play. But also bloody for the players.

Hwang Dong-hyuk and Lee Jung-jae talk about Gi-hun in Squid Game 2

In a conversation with EW, director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that the audience will get to see Gi-hun as an entirely different person compared to what they saw in season one. He said,

In season 2, you will not be getting the foolish and clumsy or childish at times Gi-hun that you saw in the beginning. You will get to see a much heavier, darker side of Gi-hun.

The actor who dons the tracksuit with number 456 added that the character has a huge amount of survivor’s guilt as he was the sole survivor amongst the 456 players and has spent the past three years planning his revenge. Jung-jae noted that Gi-hun has spent time believing that the games must not continue and he must put an end to them.

Gi-hun’s purpose is not to play the game but to go after those who have created the game and put a stop to it. Compared to every other participant in the game and also himself in season 1, the approach that he takes is going to be very different this time around.

The Star Wars actor mentioned that it can be described as a game-within-a-game for Gi-hun. The new participants include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi, Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yuri, and Won Ji-an. The director said that the characters are going to be very complex.
