“He wasn’t acting like Johnny anymore”: Johnny Depp’s $13M Movie Director was Concerned After Winona Ryder Left the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Star
Johnny Depp’s court trial with ex-wife Amber Heard and what followed altered his life and career forever. But this came long after he had his heart broken by the love of his life. Johnny Depp was in a four-year-long relationship with his Edward Scissorhands co-star Winona Ryder.
The couple got engaged after dating for a year but broke off the engagement three years later. The consensus at the time was that they were both too young and grew apart eventually but the truth is that their lives were altered forever and Depp was never the same.
Johnny Depp Lost Himself After Losing Winona Ryder
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder met on the set of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. And quickly fell in love. For Depp, it was “love at first sight”. They started dating not too late after. Depp proposed to Ryder in 1990 when she was 19 and he was 28. The relationship was extremely public and took a toll on the young lovers. They called quits on their relationship in 1993.
Soon after parting ways with Ryder, the Pirated of Caribbean Star started dating 90s supermodel Kate Moss. The nature of this relationship was wildly different from his previous one and the change in his personality was felt unanimously.

Tim Burton saw the love blooming and the aftermath of the affair firsthand. He has worked with Depp on several movies after the break-up and has been a close friend. Just after the breakup, Burton was working with Depp on his movie Ed Wood and stated that the actor’s state was concerning.
“I felt so bad. I asked him why it happened but all he said was: ‘It wasn’t her fault, it was mine.’ It wasn’t the same as Winona. I felt weird to be around him like he wasn’t acting like Johnny anymore. It’s almost like Winona took Johnny’s soul. Johnny’s love.”
Following is a comment on the affair made by Burton in 1997:
“I believe he (Depp) never really loved Kate Moss. I mean, I love Johnny like a son, but he never was the same. I believe, also know, he belongs with Winona. So many people try to tell him and Winona they should just talk. They never say anything. Winona kept him calm. Kept him cool. Not like out of control. I feel Johnny got arrested because Kate couldn’t stop him from being wild and free. Winona could. There was one night, and Johnny was really drunk, he was shouting ‘Winona! Winona! Winona! with Kate stood right there. They got into a terrible argument. You see, he was so desperately in love with Winona, he wouldn’t admit it was over for the longest time.”

Theirs was a love of a lifetime. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to last. The separation affected both of them on a deep level. Like their relationship, the couple has been vocal about the pain they went through after as well. During their relationship, most probably within the first year, Depp got a tattoo on his bicep which said “Winona Forever”. This was a big step but Depp got the declaration of his love for Ryder permanently on his body. He later changed it to “Wino Forever” which sort of changed the meaning but still honors the love he had for Ryder.
On being asked about the tattoo alteration, the Pirated of the Caribbean star said:
“I think for me, these tattoos are a journal. As opposed to writing it on a piece of paper, I just took the initiative and put it on my skin. So I wear my journal. But even though we’re not together anymore, it doesn’t take away from the honesty of when I got the tattoo.”
Unfortunately, their love did not withstand the test of time. But the couple still holds each other in high regard, Ryder testified in Depp’s favor in the Amber Heard trial and in interviews during.
