Henry Cavill’s Argylle‘s surprising connection with Star Wars

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz to talk about his upcoming movie Argylle starring Henry Cavill as the lead. Vaughn explained back in October that the movie, which is scheduled for a February release, would be based on the as-yet-unwritten fourth volume of Elle Conway’s Argylle series. He said at the time,

“I read the book, they bought the manuscript of the book, and met with writer Jason Fuchs, and we just came up with this.”

Vaughn added,

“Book 4 which is what the movie’s based around was the one the would work for it. Mr. Lucas was cleaver enough to start Star Wars with Episode 4, so why not us?”

According to Vox, the other three parts of Conway’s books haven’t been published either. Just the first volume has been written and it doesn’t come out until February. But the director might have read the description of the following books and out of those, Book 4 suited the best for his vision of the movie.

Talking about the Star Wars connection, George Lucas wrote and directed the first Star Wars movie in 1977, which was the fourth chronological chapter of the Skywalker Saga. The movie, which went on to become a blockbuster hit, starred Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, James Earl Jones, and more. Star Wars is one of the most successful and popular franchises in the industry and actors do feel honored to be a part of the franchise.

It wasn’t until 1981 that the title was changed from Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope after the 1980s The Empire Strikes Back was released.

Will Henry Cavill’s Argylle follow the same Star Wars pattern?

The director Matthew Vaughn during his conversation clarified the reason behind him basing his upcoming movie on book 4 of Conway even before it’s published. He said,

“There was a whole thing about book four a meta Universe in the sense of having fun with reinventing what the clichés of what spies are all about.”

He also noted that he is hoping that the audience would go back and read book one as he hoping to shoot that next adding that there is a scene of book one in the upcoming movie.

Vaughn’s explanation about going back to filming Book One after starting his movie with Book 4 is he differentiates his franchise from Star Wars. This is because George Lucas did not go back to filming the previous parts right after the 1977 movie’s release. However, the prequel Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace, which released in 1999, gave the audience an insight into the first chapter of the book. The Phantom Menace was the fourth movie in the franchise and the first in the prequel trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace is streaming Disney+ and Argylle is set to release in the theater on February 2.
