House Targaryen are known for their silver hair and the thrilling ability to control dragons. They can ride them as horses and even communicate with them to make them weapons in wars. The Targaryens migrated from Valyria after Daenys saw the land going up in flames. She was known for her foresight and visions that eventually led to the Targaryens being the only surviving dragon riders from Valyria.
If we go a bit further back in time, there’s a more complicated history that is said to be linked to the majestic House Targaryen. A theory claims that the House was in fact born of black magic where mages used spells and tricks to blend two species to eventually make dragons that could breathe fire. The formidable weapons that we see with the Targaryens today perhaps did not exist in nature.
The mages combined the species of Wyverns and Firewyrms to birth majestic beasts like Vhagar and Meleys. Wyverns are as close to dragons as a species can get but they were able to breathe fire only after their species merged with Firewyrms. In a thirst for more power and glory, a trait common in almost all Targaryens, the mages used the magic on themselves as well. Hence, they became Targaryen lords with silver hair and the ability to control and communicate with dragons. Some say that due to this black magic, some Targaryens are born with scales, wings, or even tails.
We saw this clearly in Daenerys’s baby with Khal Drogo who was stillborn. Even Rhaenyra’s daughter Visenya is born with similar defects, indicating their ability to birth dragon-like creatures. In extension, some even believed that Targaryens are capable of giving birth to dragons as well. Given they are made with the same black magic, it won’t be too big of a stretch to make this assumption.
