While playing the iconic Wolverine character in the X-Men movies and now the MCU with Deadpool 3, Hugh Jackman works out a lot, whether it’s his muscles or his vocal cords. When he growls or yells during fights in his character, it takes a toll on his throat and voice. In a recent interview with BBC Frontrow, the award-winning actor opened up about his preparation process and the subsequent impact of his screams.

“I’ve done some damage to my voice as Wolverine. My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling. My voice teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did [as Wolverine].”

Jackman, an adept singer as seen in various musicals, believes his voice is not as sweet as it used to be. To be as wonderful as he is on screen, The Greatest Showman actor works with teachers to learn the best techniques. His academic background in drama school also gives him an edge over others.

“We learned the technique [in school] of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice. However, during Wolverine, I did some screaming and yelling and things that I think did damage my voice, which I think I’m working on. I work with a singing teacher, and I make sure that I try not to hurt myself. And I really put a lot of effort into both physical movement, and my vocal preparation for every role.”

Given that he started his career in theater and musical movies, it’s understandable that his voice is his most precious asset. Fans hope to see the actor in more musical roles in the future, flexing his vocal cords and singing catchy songs.
