“I don’t feel like I’m the reason”: Rebel Wilson Doesn’t Blame Herself For Sacha Baron Cohen Divorce
Australian actress Rebel Wilson recently shared a story about a difficult experience she had filming the 2016 movie Grimsby. The film is a comedic spy adventure where Wilson plays Dawn Grobham, the girlfriend of a boisterous football hooligan named Norman Butcher (played by Sacha Baron Cohen).
Wilson alleged her co-star, Cohen, acted in a way that made her uncomfortable. The Hollywood actress spoke out about the incident, hoping it would inspire others to stand up for themselves in similar situations.
Rebel Wilson Accused Sacha Baron Cohen in her Memoir
Rebel Wilson‘s memoir has caused some stir. In it, she accused her co-star Sacha Baron Cohen of trying to silence her. Wilson doesn’t hold back in her memoir, calling him a “massive a**hole.” She claimed he bullied her to keep quiet about a bad experience they had together while filming the 2016 comedy Grimsby.
In a BBC Radio 4 series Desert Island Discs (via Independent), the 44-year-old described what happened with her co-star as the “worst” job situation she’s ever faced. The actress said the 52-year-old’s behavior made her feel disrespected and even “degraded.” She went on to tell host Lauren Laverne:
“That was the worst professional experience and that was where it crossed the line.” Wilson went public with the allegations, “In one way to release the shame that I had sustained in a situation that wasn’t great.”
This experience inspired Wilson to write about it in her memoir, Rebel Rising. The actress hoped that sharing the story would help her move on from the emotional burden it caused. Wilson also admitted she wished she’d spoken up at the time. “The me now would be strong enough,” The Hustle star said, explaining that a lack of confidence back then made it hard to confront the situation.
Rebel Wilson Denies Involvement in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Divorce
Sacha Baron Cohen strongly denies everything, saying Rebel Wilson’s claims are simply not true. His team said they have proof to back this up, including documents, videos, and people who saw what happened on set. With both sides telling different stories, it’s unclear who to believe. The actor’s representative told The Independent:
While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of Grimsby.
Some people also find the timing of Wilson’s book interesting. It came out just before news broke about Cohen’s split from his wife, Isla Fisher, who filed for divorce after 13 years. But Wilson reiterated that she had nothing to do with the divorce, telling The Kyle & Jackie O Show (as reported by Independent):
I don’t feel like I’m the reason, but it might have just been his general treatment to women.
