The Boys has been one of Prime Video’s biggest hits since it first premiered. It has found a unique place in the superhero genre with its dark humor, bizarre take on superheroes, and social commentary. But as the show entered its fourth season, discussions began that it might be losing its way.

The Boys has always pushed boundaries. It is known for its over-the-top violence, shocking moments, and its take on controversial topics. But as Season 4 is about to end, it has been observed that the show might be relying too heavily on those shock factors and forgetting about what made it great in the first place.

Problems With The Boys Season 4

The franchise finds itself in an awkward position. On one hand, viewers enjoy The Boys as the show is edgy and has no restrictions. On the other hand, if the show keeps trying to top itself with more outrageous scenes, it risks becoming a parody of itself, and it will be disastrous for any show, especially one that has established such a huge fanbase.

Season 4 raises the bar even more. In a recent Forbes report, it was cited that the show is beginning to rely on entertaining viewers with gimmicks and shock rather than with a well-developed plot, and fans online have also expressed their opinions in this regard.

For instance, the “Dirty Business” episode shows the sexual assault of Hughie in a way that’s just uncomfortable. Not in a way that kind of makes the viewers stop and think, which is usually the way of the show. The desire to overdo itself in terms of insanity does not really add anything to the story or characters.

The political commentary in Season 4 is also getting some criticism. The Boys has always had a sharp satirical edge, but now it’s starting to feel a bit heavy-handed. Like when they have a Republican character quote an infamous real-life “legitimate r*pe” comment almost word for word. It’s not subtle, and it’s not really saying anything new.

Another big issue is the pacing. After six episodes, the main plot boils down to Homelander thinking he is superior to everyone and wanting complete control. That has kind of been his thing all along, but there is no new development. Where are the twists and turns that made earlier seasons so gripping?

However, the show still has its moments, and the cast has given their best performances yet. The new season has tried to explore the backstories of some characters and introduced some new characters too. But the primary focus seemed to be more on the shock factor, rather than character development and clever storytelling.

Comparison Between Game of Thrones and The Boys

The whole situation with The Boys is quite similar to what happened to Game of Thrones. In Game of Thrones, the issue was that the creators hurried through the conclusion in the last couple of seasons, even when they still had to justify all the main characters and their storylines.  For example, with respect to Daenerys Targaryen’s fall to madness and the defeat of the Night King, the audience felt that the episodes were rushed.

However, The Boys is not in a hurry to reach its conclusion. It feels like the makers are dragging things out. But the main issue is the same, which is the fact that the makers are forgetting what contributed to the success of the show.

If it was for GoT, then it was face-offs, politics, and character development. For The Boys, it was their satirical humor as well as the balance between shocking moments and meaningful storytelling.

Both shows have had issues with character development in their later seasons. For example, in Game of Thrones, Jaime Lannister threw away his character arc to get back to Cersei. The Boys have a similar problem with A-Train, where his character feels a bit underdeveloped.

However, the big difference is that Eric Kripke still has time to correct the flaws. Game of Thrones was ending, so there was no coming back. But The Boys has already been renewed for a fifth season. So fans might be hoping Eric Kripke and his team take action on the concerns and end the show with a bang.

The Boys Season 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.
