“I hate modern television”: Game of Thrones Prequel ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Upsets Fans With a Major Reveal But That is Good News for the Show
The fans of Game of Thrones are in for more as HBO unveils its newest project set in the world of Westeros. It is expected that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is going to take fans back to the period when the Targaryens were still on the Iron Throne. This new prequel series is based on George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, which will expand the story of the Seven Kingdoms.
Since the second season of House of the Dragon, which premiered recently, HBO has been eager to maintain the GoT momentum. The original series may have concluded five years ago, but it was one of the shows that shaped television and pop culture. Now, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will take place 100 years before Game of Thrones.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight Will Be the Shortest Season
Production for The Hedge Knight has already started in Belfast, Ireland, where most of the initial Game of Thrones season was filmed. This return to a familiar landscape has also increased expectations among fans to see how this new story will take place in a world they already know.
However, the new season has been a topic of discussion due to its length. According to Variety, The Hedge Knight will consist of only six episodes. Sarah Adina Smith will direct three of the six episodes, and Owen Harris will direct the other three. The earlier shows typically had 10 episodes per season.
Fans of the franchise have not liked this fact, as many expressed their disappointment on social media, showing concern about how the story can be told in such a short season.

But this could be a strategic move by the studio. The original novella by George R. R. Martin is much slimmer than the massive books that inspired Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. This way, the makers do not have to include many episodes in the series, which results in a more condensed and precise story. This approach helps the series maintain its source material’s integrity while avoiding making the season slow and stretchy.
The story of the first season will follow Ser Duncan the Tall and a boy named Egg in the fantastic world of Westeros. The series will show the world of the Seven Kingdoms in a more up-close and personal manner, and the shorter season may in fact prove beneficial for this personalized experience as it will focus on the development of characters without dealing with multiple complex plotlines at the same time.
Cast and Plot of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has an impressive cast, with Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. Some of the other important members are Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, and Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon. The blend of new faces with familiar names from the franchise will provide a new perspective to the viewers.
The series is set roughly 72 years after House of the Dragon and around 100 years before Game of Thrones. The timing of the plot of the show is crucial because it will explore a period of Westerosi’s history that has not been explored in earlier adaptations. This will give an insight into how the realm worked under Targaryen rule before the events that would lead to their downfall.
The author of the novels, George R. R. Martin, is the writer and the executive producer. This ensures that the show will not lose the essence of its original source. Apart from him, Ira Parker, who contributed to the first season of House of the Dragon, will also be a writer for this season, and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal will also serve as an executive producer.
There are two more Dunk & Egg novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. As of now, only the adaptation of the first novella, The Hedge Knight, is certain. However, there are possibilities for further adaptations of the other two novellas if The Hedge Knight is successful.
Given the success of previous projects, it is evident that HBO aims to establish and grow the Game of Thrones universe gradually. Though the fans might feel disappointed by the announcement of a shorter season as of now, it might become the reason for the success of the season in the future.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will be released on HBO and Max in 2025.
All seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are streaming on Max.
