Vellani blamed her growing love for anime on Attack on Titan, which was introduced to her by her family and friends who wouldn’t stop talking about the anime. According to her, Attack on Titan kept popping up every time they talked about anime. When she started watching it, she thought it was a story that seemed like it was about humanity.

However, one particular character from Attack on Titan resonated the most with her, and it was none other than Mikasa Ackerman. Vellani said:

That is a woman who — I don’t think I’ve seen many other female characters like her who have that authority, willpower, and determination to actually act on it. I recently cut my hair, and when I looked in the mirror, I was like, I know what my next cosplay is.

Aside from Mikasa, Vellani also named the series’ other leading characters as one she especially enjoyed, praising the voice actor responsible for their performance in Attack on Titan’s finale. Vellani said that she liked Armin because she always liked to root for nerdy characters.

Shortly after finishing Attack on Titan, Vellani explored other popular anime series recommended by friends such as Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece. Although she did not want to get into One Piece at the beginning because of the overwhelming number of episodes, she finally gave in.

One Piece was one that I did not want to get into initially because it’s like, what, a thousand episodes now, and that felt like too much. Grey’s Anatomy was more than enough for me, and I stopped at, like, season 10.

But after the Netflix show came out, I was so drawn to the characters, and after the heartbreak of Attack on Titan, I needed something lighter and funnier, and that made me feel good. The characters are likable and I want to root for them all, so that’s a show I really like

Vellani’s love for anime goes beyond TV. She said she also watched Suzume just before going to Japan and loved it, calling the movie a masterpiece. She also claimed to have watched Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron, which really spoke to her as a 21-year-old and assured her that her inner child still existed.
