“I remember just being, like, really happy”: Eminem’s Journey of Sobriety from Being a Full Blown Addict is a Story for the Ages
Popular rapper and singer Eminem has often been hailed as one of the best rappers in modern times. His struggles with being an addict and other personal issues have often found their way into his lyrics as he feels music is the best way to express oneself. Eminem adopts an alter ego Slim Shady to talk about the darker, more serious aspects of his life.
Eminem is not just a brilliant rapper, but also a supportive and encouraging person. Like him, many other celebrities have also felt empowered to share their struggles with alcohol and addiction in general while trying to overcome their fears.
Eminem Shares Milestone in Sobriety
The Mockingbird Rapper took to Instagram to post an image of the commemorative coin people receive as a token of proof of their sobriety. Eminem shared that he has completed 16 years without touching alcohol. His journey from being a hardcore addict to now a sober man, focusing on his career in music is inspiring to many people.
Born as Marshall Mathers, he took the stage name Eminem when he began making his career in rapping. Love and support from his peers in the industry and fans alike poured in with comments on his social media post as people lauded his commitment to remaining sober. The rapper’s younger brother Nathan Mathers said, “Greatest Influence and Mentor.”
The photo of the recovery coin has now garnered comments from across the globe as his fans are happy for the rapper’s tremendous recovery journey. Eminem has never shied away from talking about his journey and has openly claimed how addicted he was to valium, alcohol, and Vicodin. Eminem celebrated his 12th sober anniversary with a similar post in 2020. On the Paul Pod podcast, he claimed how being sober made him the happiest he has ever been. He held on to that feeling and the journey towards sobriety became easier.
Eminem Almost Lost Out on Rapping Career Due to Drugs
In a personal essay for XXL, Eminem outlined the horrific experiences he went through before he found solace in music and rapping. He recalled how he and his friends used to travel to Tijuana to buy drugs. One time, the guy before them in line was stopped and searched where the guards found pills in his pocket. Eminem and his friends too were carrying a lot of pills. He further elaborated,
“Obviously, if I ended up in jail, the album probably wouldn’t have come out and nothing with my rap career would’ve ever happened. I would’ve been done right then. So, it should have been one of the first signs to me, but I never thought that I had a problem. I just really, really liked drugs. As I started making a little money, I could buy more of them.”

Eminem then stated how he became deeply entrenched in addiction after he became famous as a rapper and could get free pills from people. Things started to turn for the better when he saw articles in magazines that dissed him. He found it disrespectful and knew he had to get better and be better. For five long years, he was addicted to drugs and struggled to find his way back to shore. He got inspired by other MCs who showed him a better path, and the rest is history.
