And I didn’t even watch it before I did it! I wasn’t out to do a big sequel for money or anything like that, I wanted to make this for very personal reasons. Like I said, I didn’t watch the first movie to prepare for this. I remembered the spirit of it and I remembered everybody here.

Seems like Burton did not need to revisit the story before diving headfirst into making a sequel. While it sounds like a very risky (not to mention expensive) risk, Burton is an experienced director who knows what he is doing. This might even help him get a fresh perspective on the characters and the story which needs to fit the modern context.

At the same time, his mighty decision to not watch the original movie to see what he did wrong or what aspects could be strengthened in the sequel could prove disastrous.
