The horror-comedy genre in Hollywood has long awaited the return of the ghost who blended the two genres in the first place – Beetlejuice. From the genius mind of Tim Burton, Michael Keaton brought the ghostly character to life on the big screen who has now become an icon of sorts.

Returning to the screen nearly three decades after the original movie premiered, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is continuing the legacy of the ghost and the Deetz family as so many years have passed. Nevertheless, their conjoined fates bring them together once again for an adventure-filled humorous ride.

Although fans have no doubts about the filmmaking prowess of the visionary director Tim Burton, he recently shared something that left people in a daze. Beetlejuice is returning to the big screens with a sequel almost thirty years after the original movie was first released. However, that did not stand in the way of Burton making Beetlejuice Beetlejuice without even watching the original flick again.

It’s understandable that as a director, he must remember the major details of the story by heart. Nonetheless, even people with spectacular memories need to go back to a project they worked on many years before to get the facts right. At the Venice Film Festival, the filmmaker revealed,

And I didn’t even watch it before I did it! I wasn’t out to do a big sequel for money or anything like that, I wanted to make this for very personal reasons. Like I said, I didn’t watch the first movie to prepare for this. I remembered the spirit of it and I remembered everybody here.

Seems like Burton did not need to revisit the story before diving headfirst into making a sequel. While it sounds like a very risky (not to mention expensive) risk, Burton is an experienced director who knows what he is doing. This might even help him get a fresh perspective on the characters and the story which needs to fit the modern context.

At the same time, his mighty decision to not watch the original movie to see what he did wrong or what aspects could be strengthened in the sequel could prove disastrous. Any incongruencies in the storyline or major shifts from the already established narrative might set off many die-hard fans who love the characters and the town of Peaceful Pines.

However, it seems like Burton already made up his mind as to where the story will go next. Thereby not needing to revisit the movie before making the sequel. Only after watching the movie will we be able to tell if this decision proved fruitful or harmful to the entire franchise and Burton’s career.
