SUMMARY
  • Lena Dunham will not be directing Polly Pocket.
  • Dunham appreciates Greta Gerwig for giving life to the Barbie universe.
  • The actress and director is working with Netflix for two projects.

After the roaring success of the Barbie movie, Mattel decided to plunge into its other toy categories and monetize its profits. Next in line was a film based on its toy Polly Pocket. When the movie was announced, the Mattel team was extremely excited to have Lena Dunham write and direct whereas Lily Collins stars as the lead.

Now, it seems like Dunham is no longer linked to the Mattel project and is instead focusing her energy on other projects close to her heart.

Girls star Lena Dunham has often been one of the frontrunners in the female comedy genre. Her imaginative thought process and quirky way of thinking give way to extraordinary projects that resonate with the masses while also being meaty in content. A while ago, it was announced that Mattel is making a movie with MGM based on its Polly Pocket toy.

Even though Dunham has worked on the script and has an idea in place, it seems like she won’t be actively working on the movie anymore. In a recent tell-all interview with The New Yorker, the actress and director revealed,

I’m not going to make the Polly Pocket movie. I wrote a script, and I was working on it for three years. But I remember someone once said to me about Nancy Meyers: the thing that’s the most amazing about her is that the movie she makes or the movie she would be making with or without a studio, with or without notes—that somehow her taste manages to intersect perfectly with what the world wants. What a fucking gift that is. And Nora Ephron, too, who was such a mentor to me, but always said, ‘Go be weird. Don’t kowtow to anyone.’

Dunham goes on to praise Greta Gerwig’s take on the Barbie universe with which she made everyone laugh, cry, and emote with the lead characters. On the other hand, Dunham feels she doesn’t have it in her to do full justice to a project like Polly Pocket. She further added,

I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make “Polly Pocket.”

Understandably, the pressure on her to compete with Barbie’s success must be enormous. Mattel would expect the project to continue the streak of success even though they realize Polly Pocket has not been as famous and well-loved as the Barbie dolls.

Once the interview took Polly Pocket out of the mix, Dunham opened up about her future projects that have kept her busy lately. The actress and director has her hands in various baskets as of now, including two series for Netflix, one of them being Too Much, which seems to be based on the tales of her own life and love experiences.

Shedding light on her future projects, she said,

There is a spy show that I’m creating for Netflix. It’s based on the idea that organizations like the C.I.A. and M.I.6 are tapping college students in, earlier and earlier. So it’s, basically, What happens when a group of college kids, who have all the issues, pains, and fears of college kids, are tasked with an agenda of national protection? My New Year’s resolution this year was, like, “I’m going to try to think more commercially thirty-seven per cent of the time, just because it’s an interesting challenge.”

Dunham is a creative juggernaut and presently, she wishes to remain behind the camera and not star in a project. She further expresses how the criticism and backlash from her HBO show Girls was too much to bear. Dunham wants to work on projects that mean more to her and put her incredible talents to use.
