“I’m not sure what actors can do about it”: Tom Hanks Was Troubled by the Rise of Technology in Hollywood Long Before AI Became Popular
Actor Tom Hanks, who has established himself in Hollywood for the past 30 years, has enjoyed one of the longest careers in the film industry. As today’s cinema discovers the ultimate relevance of technologies, he expresses his concerns about the existence of himself and other actors in the industry.
Tom Hanks was troubled by Hollywood’s technological advancements
The growth of technology has contributed to significant changes in today’s film industry. During an interview with The Adam Buxton Podcast, Tom Hanks discussed how AI creates new opportunities for actors while the actor was once troubled by the rise of tech in the film industry.
Hanks is one of the most popular idols in Hollywood and is acclaimed for his versatility in both dramatic and comedy roles. His exceptional acting ranges from his breakthrough in Big to his Oscar-winning performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. His collaboration with Steven Spielberg produced Saving Private Ryan, and his unparalleled performance in Cast Away makes him a promising asset to the industry.
The film industry has undergone numerous profound changes as a result of the development of technology. Digital cameras and CGI have enabled visually stunning effects. Advanced editing streamlined the editing process , and sci-fi and fantasy movies and fanfiction greatly benefited from the process, making them easier to produce. This has also benefited actors.
“I am very troubled by it,” Hanks once told The New York Times (via The New York Post). “But it’s coming down, man. It’s going to happen. And I’m not sure what actors can do about it.”

Tom Hanks sees AI’s positive impact on the film industry
Hanks observed that technology had advanced yet further over the years. Actors in film or television can be completely replaced by AI. Stars who weren’t previously involved in projects be inserted using deep-fake. The promise of AI is that it can even do voice replication for musicians. Surprisingly, while many actors fear and protest against AI, Hanks has a different view; he seems to have a positive outlook, acknowledging that AI can create a new possibility for storytelling. Hanks told The Adam Buxton Podcast not too long ago.
What is a bona fide possibility right now, if I wanted to, that I could get together and pitch a series of seven movies that would star me in them, in which I would be 32 years old from now until kingdom come.”
Hanks asserted that AI would even allow his own acting performances to outlive him.
“Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age by way of AI or deep fake technology… I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but my performances can go on and on and on.”
Using deep fakes can create legal issues, which led actors to leave their projects and come forward to strike to ensure legal rights over their works. Hanks says,
“We saw this coming,” before adding, “I can tell you that there [are] discussions going on in all of the guilds, all of the agencies, and all of the legal firms in order to come up with the legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everybody else’s being our intellectual property.
These reasonable worries apply to every aspect of the Hollywood industry. The least Hollywood can do is protect the real people who actually work in the industry, even though it appears impossible to stop AI from becoming a tool in the filmmaking process.
