Long maintaining its position as the largest global streaming service, Netflix stands upon a vast content library. Moreover, its attempt at making original content has more or less reaped success with the likes of Stranger Things, Daredevil, and Bridgerton going on to become major pop culture influencers.

Thus, with such great power, it also has the responsibility of deciding the fate of such productions, which, at times, can go completely against fans’ wishes, the latest example of which comes in the form of Noah Centineo’s The Recruit.

Premiering in December 2022, the spy adventure-drama followed a CIA lawyer navigating through complex negotiations and situations amid the power play of international politics. Its intriguing plot made for a good watch and left fans waiting for the next season, scheduled to drop soon. However, the streamer’s alleged latest update has instead sparked major concerns.

Netflix drops an update for Season 2 of The Recruit

To get rid of anxiousness, Netflix is still developing season two of The Recruit. However, a report by What’s on Netflix claimed that the upcoming iteration will consist of only six episodes, against the first one’s eight. Additionally, the show still does not have a confirmed release date attached to it, with estimates pointing at a 2025 schedule.

The reduced episode count comes on the backs of other Netflix shows such as The Diplomat and One Piece (anime remake) receiving similar updates, with the latter’s count being almost cut by half, from a planned 53 to just 25 episodes. While official reasons for any of the shows have come forth, budget constraints and production delays may be the likely culprits.

Season 2 of the Noah Centineo show was initially planned to begin filming in mid-2023, but the twin Hollywood strikes pushed plans by months. As of now, the show has wrapped up initial shoots and is currently in post-production with showrunner Alexi Hawley returning to duties. Yet, Netflix’s reported plans to reduce the episodes have ignited another serious fear among fans, which may very well be valid.

Several of Netflix’s recent productions have not had a stellar track record with their latest seasons. The Witcher would be one such show, whose season three marked its lowest performance since its airing. Additionally, the streamer is likely taking note of underperformance very strictly and in return dealing rather harshly, with Dead Boy Detectives being the latest victim.

As such, fans of The Recruit took to social media and expressed their concerns over Netflix’s update. Furthermore, many also questioned the rationale behind it as the upcoming season is meant to pick up and resolve major cliffhangers from the first season, including the protagonist, Owen’s fate.

Fear of Netflix possibly canceling The Recruit after its second season sparked anger and debate within the fandom. A Collider interview from 2022 also had Hawley mention only thinking about the current story, as he claimed “And you can’t worry about Season 2’s, or Season 3’s, or beyond”.

The statements and the streamer’s push for numbers are the major reasons for this concern.
