A very few actors get nominated for Emmys in their first year of being getting selected. Paddy Considine was submitted by HBO for Emmy consideration for his performance as King Viserys Targaryen in House of the Dragon. However, he did not receive a nomination when the nominees for the 2023 Emmy Awards were announced.

While the competition is fierce, fantasy author George R.R. Martin believes the actor deserved recognition, and his absence from the nominations list was a big miss. The creator is calling out what he sees as a major oversight.

Paddy Considine played King Viserys I Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Unlike the Viserys in George R. R. Martin‘s book Fire & Blood, the show’s Viserys is a complex and sad character.

Considine brilliantly showed this change, playing a king burdened with duty, illness, and family problems. The 75-year-old Martin himself recognized this in his blog on Not A Blog, stating:

Last season HotD essentially recreated King Viserys, giving him a much different backstory and far more depth than the jolly party-loving king I created for FIRE & BLOOD… and DAMN Paddy Considine was glorious in the role.

Critics and audiences alike adored Considine’s performance. For instance, No Stage Fright’s Alvaro Corujo wrote on Rotten Tomatoes:

All the actors are at an absolute level, although Paddy Considine and Emma D’Arcy are a bit above their cast mates.

On the other hand, a fan wrote on RT:

Absolute travesty that paddy Constantine didn’t not get a a Emmy he was uttterly brilliant.

The Emmy Awards are seen as the highest achievement in television. Getting nominated is a big honor, and winning can boost an actor’s career. But sometimes, awards ceremonies don’t capture all the outstanding performances out there.

Considine didn’t get an Emmy nomination this year, but his role showed he’s a skilled actor. Awards are important, but what really matters is how audiences react and remember a performance.

So, even though the Emmy nominations went to others, Martin’s strong support shows how much Considine’s performance mattered. And the praise from critics and fans says a lot about its impact.

House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, took the world by storm in late 2022. Though none of the actors were nominated for individual awards, the show itself was in the running for Best Drama Series at the 2023 Emmy Awards.

So why were Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and the rest of the cast missing from the ceremony? It turns out, many of the actors are based in England and attending the Emmys in Los Angeles would have been a big trip, especially since chances of winning seemed low. House of the Dragon won a single Emmy Award for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes for The Heirs of the Dragon.
