Earlier this month Warner Bros announced via their social media account that they will be releasing a whole new Harry Potter series on HBO Max. Millions of fans have been waiting to see the new project of the iconic franchise, but the trailer for the upcoming series appears to have gotten mixed reviews from its fans. The project is still in its early development stage as a result, the release date has yet to be confirmed.

The streaming giant is describing the upcoming Harry Potter series as,

“The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

It continued,

“Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

It states,

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

Fans of the Harry Potter film series grew up watching Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright, Tom Felton, and Emma Watson, among other stars of the popular franchise. So, when it was announced that J.K. Rowling’s novels will be used for a television series fans wondered who would be starring in the show. Along with the trailer they captioned the post as,

“Your Hogwarts letter is here. Max has ordered the first ever #HarryPotter scripted television series, a faithful adaptation of the iconic books. #StreamOnMax.”

Fans began tweeting their views hours after the trailer for the upcoming series was released, and it appears that they are unhappy with the teaser and the Harry Potter franchise’s decision to debut the TV series. Read some of the tweets here.

An avid Harry Potter franchise fan wrote,

“Why? The films are some of the greatest book-to-screen adaptations of all time. They are iconic, and it’s absolutely insane to remake them into a series. A much better route would be to make a 2-movie adaptation of The Cursed Child with the original movie cast, a Dumbledore vs. Grindelwald movie to finish out the Fantastic Beasts arc. But with better marketing so that people actually go see it and to make a James Potter / Marauders prequel series. Who is making these dumb decisions?”

A user wrote,

“I’ve seen like 500 tweets in the last 48 hours about how much effort they are going to put into making this new Harry Potter its own thing – new cast, faithful adaptations, 10-year plan, etc – and then a teaser drops and they just recycle the John Williams theme???? lol mental.”

A second user wrote,

“The trailer for the new Harry Potter TV show has the same theme tune as the movies. I mean that’s nothing new with reboots but it is literally just gonna be the same thing all over again with a new cast lol,” another claimed. “What’s the point? I know the point is to make money.”

Another user wrote,

“JK better have a hand in it or else it’s going to fail. In order to be faithful to the books you need the author to help out. Look at Rick Riordan he is helping out with the Percy Jackson series. Harry Potter is special to people like me who grew up with it. Don’t mess this up.”

Even though there is a huge tidal wave of disappointment and hostility from fans, the makers of the reboot still have a chance, owing to the franchise’s heft. It remains to be seen how well the show has been made, it is too early to count it out.
