A key question surrounding the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series has been whether it will acknowledge the events of Netflix’s original Daredevil show starring Charlie Cox. Now, a Marvel producer has confirmed that seasons 1-3 of the Netflix series are considered official Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) canon.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Marvel Studios executive producer Brad Winderbaum stated that the Netflix shows fall within the MCU’s “Sacred Timeline.”

Winderbaum said, “I can say that up until this point, we’ve been a little bit cagey about what’s Sacred Timeline, what’s not Sacred Timeline. But now that some time has passed; now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline.”

By confirming the Netflix Daredevil seasons as canon, this suggests the new Born Again series will directly reference events and characters from the original show. Star Vincent D’Onofrio has already hinted that Born Again will have the same “feel” as the Netflix series. Easter eggs connecting the shows have also been spotted.

Marvel now seems ready to fully embrace Netflix’s Daredevil as part of Matt Murdock’s canonical backstory in the MCU moving forward.

Speculation has swirled for some time that Marvel intended to bring Netflix characters like Daredevil into its official timeline. Last year’s Disney+ series Secret Invasion included a reference to the Battle of New York from Daredevil season 1.

Additionally, Disney has touted Charlie Cox‘s return as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home as the character’s MCU debut, implicitly connecting the Netflix show.

While now acknowledging the Netflix series as canon, the Daredevil revival will still shake things up. Born Again is bringing in a new showrunner and creative team to reimagine the character. Plot details remain under wraps, but some changes to tone and story are likely.

The MCU also now features characters like Spider-Man who never interacted with Daredevil before. Integrating Daredevil into the wider MCU will take some skillful writing.

But Winderbaum’s comments confirm fans don’t need to forget the original Daredevil story. Its place in Murdock’s history appears assured moving into Phase 5.
