“It sounds really twisted”: Winona Ryder’s One Idea For Lydia Deetz Is so Crazy, They Could’ve Never Shown it in Beetlejuice 1 Because the Actress Was Still Underage
- In Beetlejuice, Lydia is a young kid who learns about the ghost and the other deceased couple since she’s the only one who can see them.

- If Tim Burton wishes them to be the endgame for this story, then nobody can stop Lydia and Beetlejuice from being together.
The house of the Deetz family in Winter River comes back to life as they return home after a family tragedy. Along with them, the ghost of Beetlejuice also comes back to haunt the family and have another set of adventures with the Deetzs. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara are reprising their roles in the sequel.
Titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton takes the iconic horror flick further into a modern context where Lydia Deetz has a teenage daughter and Beetlejuice’s alleged ex-wife seeks revenge. The movie is expected to be a wild ride with more fun and drama than the last one.
Winona Ryder expresses unfulfilled desire for Lydia in Beetlejuice
In Beetlejuice, Lydia is a young kid who learns about the ghost and the other deceased couple since she’s the only one who can see them. The story revolves around the Maitlands, owners of the house before it gets sold to the Deetz family, as they try to get them to vacate the house.
However, things tend to spiral out of control once the Deetz couple learns about the ghosts and tries to make the town a landmark tourist spot. Lydia is the only one who tries to protect the ghosts from getting exorcised as she summons Beetlejuice for help. Talking about their intertwined fate, Winona Ryder recently said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast,
I always wanted Lydia to end up with Beetlejuice. I know that sounds twisted but that was my big pitch to Tim. I know I was 15 in the first one would have been weird but I’m 51 or 52 I actually can’t remember was born on October 29th in 71 but I always think I’m like yeah anyway, I just have this like love I don’t know if it’s just because I love the movie and I love Michael and I love Tim and I just but I have this like this dream that they will end up together as just like this bickering kind of George and Martha.
It’s definitely an interesting choice of future for Lydia, considering she seems to be married and with a daughter in the sequel. Nevertheless, if Tim Burton wishes them to be the endgame for this story, then nobody can stop Lydia and Beetlejuice from being together, not even the difference in their realms of existence, because Burton will find a way.
Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega share the same Reverence for Movies
While talking on the podcast, Ryder further shared how amazing it was to work with young actress Jenna Ortega. Ever since she appeared on Wednesday in her signature goth look, fans have gone gaga over Ortega’s looks and her acting prowess alike. Burton has been keen on working with Ortega more often, and now it seems like the entire cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is smitten with the actress.
I found the younger me in her and only because she has the same reverence for film and it’s sort of like we share that religiously.
It will indeed be fun to see Ryder and Ortega’s on-screen chemistry as mother and daughter. During the press tours, we have seen them together, often smiling and enjoying each other’s company. The effortlessness of their equation buds from this similarity and will add more value to the movie.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released on September 6, 2024.
