“It was love at first sight”: Hollywood Director Agrees With Gwyneth Paltrow About Her First Audition With Ex-boyfriend Brad Pitt

As two of the most beautiful actors of the past generation, it’s no surprise Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow felt a certain connection and attraction towards each other. The two actors have worked together in the past and even dated for some time. However, their first meeting has media enchanted, as a Hollywood director shares in his memoir how the two actors met for the first time. Such romances are always building and breaking up in Hollywood, but their chemistry was truly unlike anything else.

When Did Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow Meet?

Seven actors Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow dated briefly in the 1990s and even got engaged only to call it quits about six months later. They shared a beautiful relationship and fans reminisce about their time together even now. Being incredibly good-looking and talented, the actors felt a pull towards each other that they could not deny. In the past, Paltrow has claimed that it was love at first sight for her when she saw Brad Pitt.

Ed Zwick’s memoir Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions confirms this claim as the director talks about auditioning Paltrow for a role in the movie Legends of the Fall in which Pitt was in the lead. Vanity Fair has shared an excerpt from the book that sheds light on how the couple’s first meeting went when Paltrow read for Susannah’s part in the movie.

“We were only four weeks from shooting and still hadn’t found our Susannah. We read many wonderful actresses, but none of them had the combination of vivacity and sadness—in other words, manic depression—that foretold her tragic end. It was during one of these readings that Brad met Gwyneth Paltrow. Though she was too young for the part, there was more than movie chemistry in the room as they read. When I saw them together months later at our premiere, I wasn’t surprised.”

At the premiere of Legends of the Fall, Paltrow and Pitt walked the red carpet together, making their relationship official to the world. During a podcast appearance on Call Her Daddy last year, Paltrow admitted that she was smitten with Pitt since she set her eyes on him. Nonetheless, Paltrow finally found the Brad she was supposed to end up with and is currently happily married to Brad Falchuk.

Why Did Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow Break Up?

While she spoke of her relationship with Pitt on the podcast, she became nostalgic about how Pitt had proposed while they were in Argentina. Paltrow was only 24 years old but she accepted the proposal since she was in love with Pitt. However, she came to her senses soon afterwards and realized that it was not the right decision.

“I had a lot of development to do, looking back in hindsight. In a lot of ways, I didn’t really fully start to come into myself until I was 40 years old. And I had such a pleasing issue. I didn’t really even understand how to listen to my instincts and act from that place for what was right for me. I was always trying to adjudicate what was right for everyone else.”

Their 9-year age gap became stark after she looked back on it. She had a lot of growing to do. Pitt, on the other hand, was ready to settle down and start a family. All such aspects contributed towards the couple finally going their separate ways. It isn’t to say Paltrow was not heartbroken when they broke up. They took some time to regain their past selves and get back to focusing on their career.
