“It’s a good noisy”: Demon Slayer Producer’s Favorite Character Also Happens to be the Most Hated Character of the Series
Demon Slayer is a fan-favorite series that has risen in popularity in the anime industry for its fast-paced action sequences, stunning visuals, and well-liked characters. The series also explores profound themes of compassion, love for family, and courage even in the face of adversity. However, not all characters are known for their courage.
Zenitsu Agatsuma, a major supporting character in the series, is known for his cowardice, his whiny nature, and an unhealthy obsession with women. He is also not well-liked in the Demon Slayer fandom for his cowardly, weak-willed nature. Despite his talent and skills, he has a rather low self-esteem, going as far as considering himself useless.
Yuma Takahashi Claims That Zenitsu Agatsuma Brings Him Joy
There might be only one person in the whole world who is not annoyed with Zenitsu’s loudness. In an interview with Yuma Takahashi, the producer of Demon Slayer, was asked about his favorite moments from the manga that was brought to life through animation. In reply, he said that there were way too many moments for him to narrow it down. But he did specify two moments from the anime series:
One is the water-breathing technique itself. I think seeing that in motion is incredible, and I think a lot of fans can relate to that. It’s one of my favorite parts of the show. Secondly, one of the great joys of anime is getting to hear the sound elements of a manga brought to life, in particular the voices.
Then he mentioned one character who particularly stood out for him – and it was none other than loud-mouthed Zenitsu Agatsuma! He stated that Zenitsu frequently brings comic relief to the show, and seeing and hearing him was one of the greatest joys of bringing Demon Slayer to life.
The interviewer (rightfully) commented that Zenitsu is very noisy, in response to which the producer immediately swooped down to his defense, saying:
Very noisy! But it’s a good noisy.
It does seem like the producer got attached to Zenitsu’s character despite him being noisy and whiny, and perhaps there’s a silver lining to the character after all!
Zenitsu Agatsuma Displays a More Serious Side To His Character
Zenitsu is far from your typical demon slayer. Unlike Tanjiro, who jumps into action without any heed for his life, Zenitsu’s constant crying and fainting make him anything but heroic. Zenitsu’s journey does not begin with a burning desire to avenge his family. We find out that a girl misled Zenitsu and stole all of his money so she could flee with another man in chapter 33 of the manga and episode 17 of the anime’s first season.
At that time, Zenitsu was unaware of Jigoro Kuwajima. After his debt was paid off, Kuwajima was the one to encourage Zenitsu to become a demon slayer. While not all Hashira suffer through the same traumatic events, it usually acts as the driving force or motivation that shapes them into who they are.
In chapter 136 of the manga and season 4 episode 7, Zenitsu learns of Kuwajima’s untimely death, and everything changes for him. The humiliation caused by his other student turning into a demon led to this extreme action.
This unexpected loss triggered an unseen fire within Zenitsu. His anxiety and nervousness vanish, and he is left with a single goal in mind: to destroy Kaigaku and avenge his master. Zenitsu’s journey from becoming a coward to a driven and skilled swordsman highlights the importance of having a purpose with the Demon Slayer Corps.
