At a time when regular new releases from the likes of Netflix have regularly contested and dominated this space, this week the battle will shift between two comic-book studio titans. Marvel and DC will be competing with their respective live-action series, the former’s Kathryn Hahn starrer Agatha All Along, and the latter’s The Penguin, with Colin Farrell as the lead.

Dropping just a day apart from one another, the two shows also hold the distinction of being in development for long durations. However, it should be noted that these two vary vastly in terms of genre and appeal. Additionally, they also hold varying importance in their live-action cinematic universe. Yet, there is plenty of content to digest.

Falling into the genres of dark comedy and fantasy, Agatha All Along comes as a spin-off to 2021’s WandaVision. The Jac Schaeffer-created show will follow Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness trapped in the aftermath of the events of the Elizabeth Olsen-led show. However, as previewed in the trailer, she would be freed of Wanda’s spell and face the trials of the Witches’ Road to regain her powers.

Diving deep into the lore of magic and witches, the MCU show will also feature Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza, who may have a substantial sub-plot, among others, as new faces. On the other side of the coin, DC Studios will have Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, continuing his stint from Matt Reeves’ 2022’s The Batman. Moreover, Cristin Milioti and Rhenzy Feliz will also star in the series.

The Penguin will have its plot set one week after the events of the Robert Pattinson movie. It will deal with Farrell’s character trying to make the most out of the chaotic aftermath left behind by The Riddler. Laden with shrewd manipulation tactics and insight into Gotham’s crime-ridden streets, the show will also showcase his transformation from a mid-level mobster to a feared kingpin.

Colin Farrell adopts a darker tone while Kathryn Hahn sticks to mass appeal

The Penguin carries a TV-MA rating while Agatha All Along comes across as TV-14. A likely reason is the former’s no-holds-barred exploration of the criminal underworld and Collin Farrell’s insistence on smoking a cigar. Furthermore, it will also dive deep into the character’s persona as a heartbroken man beneath a villainous exterior, providing the necessary character background as he rises to be one of Batman’s biggest nemesis.

The Kathryn Hahn show will stick to a balance of humor and heart, building itself up on the Marvel formula. Although, it is not yet certain if the protagonist, Agatha, will make future appearances in the MCU. However, it has hinted at a possible appearance or at least a mention of Wanda Maximoff with the show-runner teasing fans to have their “fingers crossed”.

Finally, Agatha All Along will carry nine episodes and drop its first and second as well as the last two chapters on the same date, while others will drop weekly every Wednesday, starting from September 18. Meanwhile, The Penguin will have eight episodes and follow a weekly drop schedule with new episodes coming one at a time and every Sunday, except for the first that drops this Thursday, September 19.

Agatha All Along will stream on Disney+ and The Penguin will be available on HBO max.
