SUMMARY
  • When we look at House of the Dragon, we notice that the dragonriders are more comfortable with their companions while they are up in the air as compared to Daenerys in Game of Thrones.
  • They also look more regal as they have a proper saddle to sit atop rather than improvise the ride as they go.
  • The decorations on the saddle are nuanced to represent the Targaryen heritage and culture, proving that attention to detail was one of the top priorities for the makers of the HBO show.

House of the Dragon season 2 managed to intrigue, inspire, and ignite fans’ passion for the Westerosi world to go on. The prequel series takes viewers back to a time when the Targaryens reigned supreme and dragons were the ultimate weapon of power. However, now fans have to wait at least a year before the story picks up where it left off.

Much like Game of Thrones, the show works best when it’s filled with battles, flying dragons, and a twist at every turn, from the genius mind of George R.R. Martin. House of the Dragon takes viewers on an otherworldly journey that makes them forget about everything else. While expecting the showrunners to adapt the narrative with incredible accuracy often leads to disappointment, there were some minute details that ordinary viewers must have missed.

The elaborate world of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones is so equally vast that people often forget who’s who. Moreover, the world must look different to readers who voraciously read the books and then see the story come to life on screen.

Game of Thrones features only one dragon rider at first, Daenerys Targaryen. Jon Snow joins her atop the beasts in the later episodes, but she’s the sole Targaryen who communicates and controls the dragons. So, whenever she rides a dragon, we see her holding on for dear life as she grabs the scales on the dragon’s back.

However, when we look at House of the Dragon, we notice that the dragonriders are more comfortable with their companions while they are up in the air. They also look more regal as they have a proper saddle to sit atop rather than improvise the ride as they go. Dragons are prepared for their ride when a Targaryen royalty has to go for a round and equipped with a royal-looking saddle.

With intricate craftwork and designs, the saddle looks absolutely stunning and truly exudes the spirit of Kings and Queens. It was meant to showcase the authority and sheer grandeur of the Targaryen family as they wielded their precious weapon cum companion with pride. A Song of Ice and Fire does not particularly mention Daenerys using a dragon saddle. This can be attributed to dragons being extinct for the most part in the future.

Aidan Pitchford, a designer and craftsman who worked on the HBO show House of the Dragon shared the final images of the saddle that belonged to Sunfyre and Aegon II. The short-tempered King used to sit on his dragon majestically and even rode to battle to prove he was as much of a man as his brother and the Commander of the Kingsguard.

Many fans took this as an opportunity to poke fun at Aegon II’s sad state after he almost fell to his death, while others longingly admired the beauty of the saddles.

The decorations on the saddle are nuanced to represent the Targaryen heritage and culture, proving that attention to detail was one of the top priorities for the makers of the HBO show.

The patterns and designs invoke a feeling of splendor and majestic royalty that can only be expected from the mighty Targaryens. At the same time, we wonder how Daenerys’s saddle would have looked like as it must have represented her unrelenting ambition and thirst for power.
