Jaime Lannister Inspires 1 ‘House of the Dragon’ Arc That Explains Aemond Targaryen’s Undying Loyalty to King Aegon II Despite Being Infinitely Better Than Him
Drawing parallels between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is not that difficult since both of them are based in the same universe, and just have different timelines. The shows are indelibly interconnected as themes of power, desire, and infidelity are commonly found in both.
From incestuous relationships to heartbreaking betrayals, both the HBO shows are mercilessly fierce in their narrative. Without a care for sympathy or leniency, the Kings and Queens of Westeros believe in only one currency, which is that of unlimited power. The ongoing House of the Dragon season 2 focuses solely on the claim to power by two Targaryen heirs to the Iron Throne.
Why is Aemond steadfastly loyal to Aegon II?
Similar to how Jaime and Cersei Lannister were engaged in an incestuous relationship away from the prying eyes of the Kingdom, there’s a theory that the same happened during the reign of the Targaryens. In House of the Dragon season 1, we see how the three children of Alicent and Viserys are not as close as other siblings. Aegon II even makes fun of Halaena and her bizarre attitude frequently.
However, it is Aemond who often stands up for his sister and defends her against Aegon II’s unkindness. Moreover, in one instance, Aemond even claims that he would have been happy to marry Halaena had Alicent asked him, instead of Aegon II. This statement, coupled with other such instances, has led some fans to believe that Aemond is actually the father of Halaena’s children. The two share a unique bond that might have turned into something more romantic.
On the other hand, this further proves why Aemond is not eyeing the Iron Throne even though he knows he deserves it more than his elder brother. Rather than dethroning Aegon II and claiming power for himself, Aemond is often seen supporting his brother and being loyal to him in every situation possible.
If we look more closely, the game of power and claiming the Iron Throne is, in essence, about legacy. So, if Aemond is truly the father of Halaena’s kids, then he has nothing to worry about since after Aegon II’s death, it will be his children who will sit on the Iron Throne.
Ewan Mitchell fields questions on the wild theory of Aemond and Halaena’s relationship
Actor Ewan Mitchell plays the daring and cunning Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon. In a recent interview with Decider, he was asked his opinion on fans shipping the sibling couple Aemond and Halaena, instead of Aegon II and Halaena.
I think it’s nice to leave, you know, little seeds out there for the audience to kind of create their own theories on things. I mean, Targaryen-ism is known for that. And so it’s not entirely out of the question. But I mean, I don’t know, it’s an interesting theory for sure.
If this theory is in fact true, things would have come full circle for the Greens and the Blacks. In the initial episodes of House of the Dragon season 1, we see Aegon II and Aemond making fun of Rhaenyra’s kids for being bastards.
Now, Halaena’s kids will also be considered bastards if they are fathered by Aemond Targaryen. With the upcoming episodes, we will have to see how the showrunners tackle and present this theory, if it has any merit at all.
Weekly episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 are streaming on Max.
